I turn around my eyes wide at what I see before me.
Lo'ak was shot.
My eyes blurred as I scream and rush towards his falling body.
'Neteyam!' I let out a screech as the scene unfolds before me. Neteyam rushes by my side checking for where the wound is ready to apply as much pressure as he could.
The wound was on his side. Neteyam's hands wrapped around the wound pushing against it firmly. Neteyam's eyes meet mine and I see his eyes were just as full of tears as my own.
'Stay here.' I say, taking his bow.
All I could feel was rage. Like a tornado buzzing inside of me. The Sky People wounded my Lo'ak and they were going to pay.
I pranced around the ship scouting for the people that punctured Lo'ak's skin. I peep my head around a corner and see six men stationed guns held up high. I make quick calculations in my head of where to go first.
I pull my bow back and allow my arrows to fly.
I somersault around the bullets being aimed towards me, dodging them carefully. Before I knew it, I was stood around six bodies. My eyes were no longer filled with tears, but with rage as I hiss daring someone to come close to me. I hear a patter of footsteps and I draw my bow yet again breathing in sharply. I was about to let go when I hear Jake's voice.
'Mai? It's me, what's going on?'
He looks at the bodies that clutter at my feet before running over and pulling me into a tight embrace. It suddenly felt like all of the air had been taken out of my lungs. I let out an exhale of a breath I didn't know I was holding letting my body go limp against Jake.
'He's - he's he' I stutter against Jake tears falling like a waterfall. He strokes my hair to comfort me asking me what's happened again.
'He's shot. Lo'ak's shot. Neteyam is with him now. I don't know what happened. I saw red. I couldn't bare to think if he died the ones that killed him would get to live.' I choke out making Jake let go of me and put his hands on either sides of my cheeks.
'Where is he Mai, you have to tell me.'
I nod and beckon for him to follow me. We make our way through the ship, having to attack sometimes on our way back. Each kill was a stone in my heart. It was 1, then 7, and now 12. 12 lives I have taken.
We arrived at the scene where my heart shattered into a million pieces and I see Neteyam still there stroking Lo'ak's hair with one hand and pressing his wound with the other. He was muttering words to him I couldn't quite make out.
'Is he breathing,' I ask Neteyam which earns a nod back but a weak 'barely.'
'He needs the Tsahik.' Jake says dragging Lo'ak's limp body onto his Ikran before flying off into the distance.
I now do not know if I'll ever speak to him again.
Neteyam was still knelt next to where his brothers body laid. He looked horrified at his hands which were once blue, but now painted red. I run over to Neteyam and pull him into a tight embrace. This is when I feel Neteyam wrap his arms around my waist and start sobbing.
'It should be me, it should be me' Neteyam whimpers into my shoulder. I shush him before leaning over to the water to try and wash the blood off his hands. He pulls his hands back.
'No, Mai. Not yet, I'm not ready to wash him away yet. Just in case.'
I nod at his wishes and look around, looking for a way to get us off this sinking ship. Eywa must have heard my prayers as Lo'ak's Ikran finally comes back to me. Neteyam and I solemnly hop on and begin the journey back to shore.
'How is he?' Neteyam asks his father as soon as we make it back to the Reef Clan.
Neteyam's eyes were now clear of any emotion, as if he wanted to prove to his father that he was strong. But I heard the waver in his voice when he spoke that short sentence, terrified of what the answer may be.
