MAI'S POV
It had been two days, I hadn't spoken to Lo'ak let alone seen him. I spent most of the days in the sea with my Ilu and Tsireya. It had been nice to see Tsireya more.
I told her about my problems with Lo'ak to which she listened intently and gave me as much advice as she possibly could. I appreciated that a lot.
I was sitting under the palm tree on the beach, Lo'ak and I's old meeting spot when Neteyam sits himself down next to me. I smile at him which tells him he's welcome to sit by me.
He cuts straight to the point, 'what's going on then with you and Lo'ak.' I feel his body shifting and watch his feet bury into the sand.
'He hasn't told you?' I say. Neteyam shakes his head in response and sighs. I continue, ' something weird happened with Ao'nung, Lo'ak was a complete dick about it of course.'
'Ah, well that's my brother for you.' Neteyam says. I suddenly get a wave of happiness over me and pull Neteyam into a warm embrace which he happily accepted.
'I don't think I tell you this enough Neteyam, but I'm so grateful for you. Really I am. I've known you for nearly a year now, and you've helped me through a great deal. You're a really good friend.'
Neteyam pulls out of the hug and smiles at me,
'Thanks Mai, oh dear is that the time? I told my dad I'd -uh- help him, do something.' Neteyam spoke in broken sentences before rushing off towards the pods.
Weird.
I squint seeing something in the distance. It was Lo'ak and I assume a hidden Payakan swimming to shore. I couldn't help but wonder if Lo'ak would come and sit next to me under our old spot. It was growing dark and the sun was setting into a beautiful sunset. I watched Lo'ak from a distance as he signalled something towards the water before jumping in, the sunset bouncing and reflecting on his skin beautifully.
I sigh as the butterflies creep back into my stomach.
I continue to watch Lo'ak as he walks out of the water, heading towards me. I quickly pulled my hair down which was usually down but clearly, not today.
He sits down next to me and we stay silent for about 15 minutes.
'The sunset looks really pretty tonight.' Lo'ak says finally gazing down upon me. I smile softly keeping my eyes forward at the sun hiding behind the water.
'Remember that time we first met and you just didn't grasp the fact that I was calling you beautiful and not the sunset.' Lo'ak chuckles to himself as my smile grows wider too.
'You were?' I say looking at him finally.
'I was Mai. I thought you were beautiful the day I laid eyes upon you. I remember looking at you and Neteyam thinking you were dating and my heart sank. I soon realised you were single. Thank Eywa.' Lo'ak jokingly put his hands together and looked up at the sky as if he was praying.
He looked at me once more, 'I know I seem to be saying this an awful lot recently, but I'm sorry Mai. I shouldn't have reacted like that. Anyway that fish freak got what was coming to him.' Lo'ak grimaced at the latter part of his speech.
I had infact seen the state of Ao'nung, and I had also heard Jake yelling at Lo'ak about what I disappointment he was.
'I saw' I reply curtly earning an exasperated groan from Lo'ak.
'Let me in Mai. Forgive me, we both know you won't regret it.' He smirks cockily at his suggestive statement.
'Oh yeah?' I say, but this only boots Lo'ak's confidence as he lifts me by my waist pulling me onto him. He tucks my hair behind my ears,
'Oh yeah.' He whispers simply.
'Fuck sake,' I say and unable to resist I kiss him. I felt the sunset beat on my back and I almost feel the purple colours that surround us in that moment, as if it were a firework going off.
I stood up dragging him up with me,
'Ain't no way I'm getting caught doing this again with you,' I laugh remembering a couple nights a go when Jake caught us kissing on the beach. I shudder remembering.
Lo'ak laughs at my statement and takes my hand in his,
'I love You Ma Mai, no more fights I'm serious.' Lo'ak looks at me with honesty in his eyes. I nod back at him not caring that we will probably argue tomorrow and be back in the same situation.
'I want you to choose me, I know what I want, who I want. But I want you to choose me Mai.' I stop in my tracks thinking about what he's telling me.
I can't help but giggle at him. I put my hand up to my hands and draw a sharp breath pretending to gasp,
'Oh my, is the Lo'ak Sully asking me, a humble Mai, to be your girlfriend,' I giggle at his enjoyed face. He breaks into a smile and mumbles 'whatever.'
'So?' Lo'ak looks at me hopefully.
'Well Lo'ak. It took you long enough.' 'Of course'
He swoops my up swinging me round in the now moonlight. The sounds of our laughs must have carried down the beach for miles.
My happiness was unexplainable.
