'Skxawng I'm shot.'
I 'm shot.
Those words replay in my head mixed with the sound of my parents telling me that someone I know is in danger of being hurt. I watch as the colour drains from Lo'ak's face matching the pale blue of Neteyam. Without saying a word Lo'ak flings Neteyam over onto his Ilu keeping him upright and holding him tight before swimming away at speeds I'd never seen him access before.
We reach a rock far away from the demon ships and place Neteyam onto the rocks. I scream out his name in disbelief of what I was seeing. It's okay I tell myself, Lo'ak was shot before. There was a difference this time though, Lo'ak's wasn't bleeding like this one is. Lo'ak's didn't go all the way through like this one has.
Lo'ak was pressing Neteyam's wound with force, 'it's my turn to look after you big bro, you've sat with me here in this position before, I will not fail you.' Lo'ak whimpers tears falling from his eyes. He knew just aswell as I did this time was different.
'Look bro, I've got a scar from my bullet, we're gonna have matching ones. We are gonna look so badass, I promise!' Lo'ak continued in despair. 'You gotta stay with me bro, how else are you gonna show off with me?' But Neteyam just smiled weakly.
I was holding Neteyam's head in my lap letting out noises of grief and sadness. Tsireya was busy signalling to someone over in the ocean, and Lo'ak was pressing his wound talking to his brother non stop telling him things were going to be okay and he is safe.
I look at Lo'ak's red hands. This is all too familiar. I remember this all too well when it happened to Lo'ak. This gave me hope but also didn't as I can't get lucky twice.
Tsireya had finished signalling as Jake and Neytiri approached the rock. They rushed over to Neteyam as the scene unfolded in front of their eyes.
'No, no, no, no, no,' Jake muttered grabbing his son out of Lo'ak and I's grasp to try himself. Neytiri dropped her bow onto the rock and cried out in despair at their first born son's dying body.
I hold Lo'ak with one arm and hold Tsireya's hand with the other. We were all sat crying.
'Dad, dad. I want to go home.' Neteyam gasps with the little air in his lungs. I feel Lo'ak's grip on my waist tighten significantly, so much that it almost hurt but I didn't care. Neteyam was all that mattered in this moment.
Then he was gone. Right in front of us, he'd gone. He was with Eywa now.
The sounds of Neytiri's cries blurred in my head as all sound disappeared in my head. We watched as Neytiri and Jake left to go and finish the war with the Sky People. They told us to get his body to shore before they left. So we did.
We swam slow, cautious that every wave that hit Neteyam's head would cause damage to the precious boy laid on the Ilu.
The half an out journey turned into an hours one but we had finally reached the shore. We dragged our feet through the sand carrying Neteyam. I wanted to kick and scream and yell and fight, but I had to be strong for Lo'ak. Lo'ak who hadn't spoken a single word since the death of his big brother.
We placed him under Lo'ak and I's palm tree. We had decided he'd be happy there, and it would allow us to feel closer to him when we sit there next. He was curled up into a ball and as Tsireya had shut his eyes, he looked like he was just sleeping, like he could wake up at any second.
Lo'ak didn't leave his side for the whole time until his parents and Tsireya's parents got back. They looked beat up, bad. Jake and Neytiri told us all to leave so they could sort their eldest son out.
We left with a pain in our hearts greater than one ever before.
