Irwin side ~ 'the one who meets them'

The sound of waiters and waitresses roaming by our seats. The clinks of sheer glass that belonged to a couple near us who was sharing a toast to their deeply profound relationship.

Middle age women having a taste of exquisite wine after a long day, tittle-tattling about their old but goofy husbands. About the memories they used to share before the kids came, about the day they met and about the magical day of their wedding.

These are sounds that you wouldn't be able to notice if you were to share a table with your friends, your family, or anyone who would be willing to join any kind of conversation with or that involves you. Precisely what I didn't had that very night I met my mother's 'beau' and shared a seating with my sister...

One of the two girls who meant the world to me.

"Amanda, honey, smile a little please." Our mother, sitting in the middle of the intense awkwardness, folded her cloth napkin onto her lap and cleared her throat. She always eased us both with those faultless nicknames she gives to each child she adores. "Ashton, darling, sit up straight."

I did what was asked of me. My sister as well, Mandy falsely splashed a light grin on her face for the sake of our mother while we waited for the man she was currently dating and his two kids we yet to meet.

"What is wrong with you two? You've been acting weird lately..." It was a second after when I realized that Mom had zero knowledge of our personal lives. She had no time to ask or meddle regularly, so she was extremely confused and curious at that moment. "Ashton...How are things at Luke's? Is his sick grandma feeling any better?"

'...Grandma?'

"Uh...She's...G-Great?" I shook my head a little, lightly, just once to get the flummoxed image out of there.

'Mom thinks I'm staying with Luke because of a sick grandma? I was pretty sure she knew what was happening...Unless...'

Amanda cleared her throat with a delicate, almost real cough. "Mom, I want to talk with you about what happened at school today...It's really important..."

'Did she...? Has she even mentioned to her about my relationship with Luke?'

"Oh, sure honey, please tell me." She quite predictively forgot about my life and focused on the youngest one of her twins. "After this, I really want to hear about Ashton, though."

"O-Okay..." She sounded doubtful, hearing my own sister try to lie was unbearable. It was like watching a baby struggling to walk or even speak. "T-T-Today I...I, uh...I was t-talking to...Uh, my friend andー Uh, sh-sh-she told me that...She told me that there's a place hiring next to the school! And that I should apply because they're looking for part-timers!"

"Nice save." I made sure to whisper it so that no one but me could hear it. While doing that, I let out a smile. "Thank you."

"Really? That's great." Mom ate that lie like lemon cupcakes with chocolate frosting after the strict seventy-day diet she goes through every year. "I hope you apply and land an interview, at least!"

"Y-Yeah..." She felt bad about it, but Amanda rescued my butt over there from lying. It's ironic that she did it by lying, too. "Me too..."

Like she asserted, the attention went back to me faster than the speed of light. "So, Ashton, how is Luke and his grandmother? She must be really sick to be needing more than one person to help her...Is it because Luke works and doesn't have enough time to do it alone?"
