Calling the day "awkward and uncomfortable" would be an understatement. Once I got inside the hallway of the university, people were giving me suspicious looks that seemed like they're scrutinizing me. I wasn't sure if it was still about my pink hair and my piercings, but I could sense there was something more than that.
Though they seemed to treat me like that everyday, I could still feel there was something weird about this day.
"Ms. Hammington?"
I turned around when someone called me from behind and I was surprised that it was Mr. Heathman, flashing his usual full smile at me.
"Sir..."
"Oh.. thank goodness.. You did great." He held out his hand as if he was trying to congratulate me.
I fixed my eyes on his hand but hesistantly took it.
"Uhm..Sir, what happened?" I was confused on his sudden change of treatment.
"You were..."
He stopped when another man called him. "Mr. Heathman! They need you in the meeting right now, sir." A young man who looked like a few years older than me walked towards us and regarded me with a smile.
Oh, this day's getting weirder.
"Alright, I'll be on my way.." Mr. Heathman said, tapping the younger man's shoulder before he nodded and left us both again.
"Uh. Yes, Ms. Hammington. I guess I'll just see you after your class." Mr. Heathman addressed before he left me alone in the hallway.
I only noticed that the hallway was empty and that I was already five minutes late.
I ran towards our room and when I peeked inside, I was surprised when I saw everybody, including Mr. Gregson, staring at me as I walked my way towards my seat.
Shit! Why are they all staring at me like that?
"Alright. Let's continue." Mr. Gregson spoke as soon as I took my seat.
I happened to glance at Roxy who was looking down on her knotted fingers and I could sense that there's something bothering her.
I tried to talk to her but she suddenly pulled her phone and typed something on it.
Maybe it's her way to avoid talking to me.
"So, you all knew that your final grades will be based on your departmental exam. If you pass, you can proceed. If not, then sorry but you're automatically disqualified in this course and you need to shift to another." Mr. Gregson added, making the whole room quiet.
All of a sudden, Travis emerged from the door and quickly took his seat infront of me.
Good to know there's someone who came later than me.
"I'm proud to say that more than half of you passed and that the two topnotchers belong to this class." He proudly announced, adjusting his tie.
I heard the quiet room went noisy with cheers and awes but I quickly turned my sight to Roxy who suddenly looked calmer. She really didn't take a glimpse of me and I just thought maybe it's better if I give her time for herself if she doesn't want to talk to me. But, it really felt bad knowing that today's my last day in the uni and I wasn't sure when I could come back.
I tore my eyes on Roxy and just stared at Travis' back. Unlike the others, he didn't react the way they did. He was just sitting with his back on the chair and didn't make a noise.
"Alright.. alright calm down now you guys. I know you just can't hide your excitement. So, now I'll start calling the two top students.." Mr. Gregson announced as he was holding a piece of paper on his hand. "Among the 300 students from this course, both of them got the first and the second place in the overall ranking." He continued and I happened to glance at Genevieve who was sitting prettily on her seat while her friends kept on cheering for her.
