I sit between Max and Lucas in the backseats of the car with Steve and Dustin in the trunk area and Robin and Nancy up front. We're driving to see Eddie with the supplies we promised...finally....and maybe also tell him about Vecna....yeah....
"Not to be a wimp, but can I sit in the car?" Robin asks, not wanting to face Eddie. "'Cause this is gonna totally and royally suck." She adds. "It'll be fine." Nancy says, even though her grip on the steering wheel is whitening her knuckles and her gaze is solely locked in front of her. "I can't stand to see those dull eyes of Eddie's break again...I really, really can't." Robin says, looking out the window. "At least he can drink himself into feeling better." Steve says from the back, hauling a six pack of beer into view which knocks against my head. I glare at him, making him lower it with an embarrassed expression. "That's what my mom does." Max mutters, not looking at us but staring out the window.
"Why don't we give it a trial?" Robin asks, looking back at me. This was a thing we did a lot back when we were stuck together at family gatherings. We'd take or make up a bad situation and see how it gets laid out to see how bad it is.
"I'll go first." She says to me, making the others glance at me. "What...?" Max asks, confused. " "Hey, Eddie. Uh, good news first this time...We got you some Dustin-approved junk food and that six-pack you requested." " She says. " "Oh yeah, and we found Vecna." " I add. "Bad news is that he's in that other, darker, much scarier dimension, and the gate's closed, so we have no way of getting to him." " I continue before nodding to Robin. " "He's entirely shut off from us, so basically you're screwed. And, no, I know you were already screwed, but now you're doubly, triply screwed." " She finishes. Well, maybe I shouldn't have given her the last sentence.
"Wait. Maybe we don't put it like that." Lucas says to us, glancing at us warily. " "We're one step closer to finding Vecna." That's what we say. That's what's important." Nancy says, ignoring us. "See, Robin? Positive spin can make all the difference." Steve says from behind us...and from the sounds of it, he's in the middle of eating. Robin turns to glare at Steve and I look out the front to see reporters, bystanders, cops, the works, all outside the house and in the area. "Oh, shit." I mutter, making everyone look. We get out of the car, stopping nearby to listen to the sheriff as he makes a statement that I assume will go out to all of Hawkins.
"As many of you know, the Roane County line received a call a little after midnight...reporting a homicide here on the lake. Officer Callahan here and myself arrived first on the scene. We made our way to the shore of Lover's Lake, about ten yards from that house you see behind me. It was there that we found the victim, an 18-year-old senior from Hawkins High, Patrick McKinney."
I look at Lucas who seems to furrow his eyebrows at the name. Wasn't that one of the guys on the basketball team?
"His limbs...his body, it was disfigured. There was an eyewitness on the scene...we have also identified a person of interest. Eddie Munson. We encourage anyone with information to please come forward."
"Oh man...this is not good. Really not good." Steve mutters as we all nod. The sheriff said something about a meeting, but I couldn't care less. "So he's officially, and properly, a person of interest now." I mutter, sighing. God, if Jason got his hands on this, his target is very likely gonna be Hellfire. And oh, who else to add to the suspect list that the 'bad girl' second in command?
Suddenly, Dustin's radio crackles to life in his backpack and a familiar voice rings through. "Dustin, can you hear me? Wheeler?" Eddie says. I grab the walkie, turning it on and speaking through it. "Eddie? Holy shit" I say. "Y/L/N? Thank god." He says. "Are you okay?" Dustin asks now. "Nah man. Pretty...pretty goddamn far from okay." He replies, sighing loudly. "Where is he?" Robin asks, poking her head closer. "Where are you, Edds?" I ask, waiting for his response. "Skull Rock. Do you know it..?" He says. Dustin nods. "Uh yeah, That's near Cornwallis and-"
