Don’t Let Go
Chapter Thirteen
I leaned my head against his chest breathing in his cologne. I looked at the blazing sun, we were still on the side of the road and people were starting to stare. “Come on, they’re probably waiting for us,” I whispered peering at him.
He look at me, his lip tugging up slightly “Yeah, let’s go,” he said grabbing a hold of my hand. We walked together, our hands intertwined and the cool breeze blowing against our skin. It was peaceful.
“Let’s live here.” My head whipped to the side my eyes widening but he wasn’t looking at me he was looking at the different houses. “One day, we can live here and start our own family.” He finally looked at me, his eyes filled with adoration. “What do you say?”
“How do you know we’ll stay together that long?” I asked. It was nerve racking, it wasn’t a marriage proposal but to an eighteen year old girl it was the equivalent.
“There’s something about you Rose. You make me crazy and make me want to pull out my hair but then you say the most beautiful things, the most random things and I know that I want to spend the rest of my life with you.” He said lowly, during his speech I couldn’t take my eyes off him. My knees were weak and my heart was pounding in my chest.
I didn’t know what to say. In that moment I couldn’t find a single thing to say so I blurted the first thing that came to mind. “Nice weather we’re having.”
He started chuckling before he started full blown laughing. Oops. “Exactly what I mean, Rose you’re one of a kind."
I smiled, “You have a way with words, I’ll give you that” I stated.
“I know," he said shrugging giving me a cheeky smile. I rolled my eyes. Arrogant arse.
There was a loud car horn sounding up the road, I then saw Justin sticking his head out of his car. “Come on lovebirds we don’t have all day!” He hollered with a beer in his hand.
“Where did you get that?” I yelled.
He shrugged his shoulders, “The liquor store.”
I rolled my eyes at his sarcastic tone. We quickly hoped in the car and I wondered where we were going to next.
Sammi handed us a beer each, I popped the cap and took a swing. “I can’t remember when I had a beer” Mitch said turning his body towards me.
“You had one only a three days ago” Justin said laughing, one head on the white steering wheel and the other playing with the ends of Sammi’s ponytail.
“Exactly” Mitch said poking his head; “Far too long” he took another swing.
“Well I can go day without alcohol” I stated.
Sammi snorted, “Please, we’d always get in trouble for ditching school to smoke and drink at the back of the school, behind that big tree.”
“Oh yeah…” I said remembered all the good time we had talking about life and were we’d be in twenty years. I looked at Mitch, his dark hair blowing slightly on his forehead, I think I know where I’m going to be twenty years…well at least I hope.
“What are you looking at?” Mitch said grinning at me.
I shrugged, “Nothing.”
“Were you staring at me?” he asked with raised eyebrows.
“Don’t flatter yourself, Phoenix” I scoffed.
He leaned so his mouth was on my eye, “Don’t worry Rose” he said sensually; “I would stare at me all day if I were you. I mean look at me” he said pointing to his body.
“You wish” I said rolling my eyes. I looked at the window still not believing that the hottest boy in our small town was my boyfriend. Although I loved him I still couldn’t shake the feeling. Not quite knowing what kind of feeling; good or bad, I don’t know.
“Hey. What’s the matter” Mitch asked holding my hand tightly in his. His had a piano player’s fingers slim and long. I wondered if he ever played.
“Are you scared of death?” I asked eventually. He looked confused for a second as to why I was asking such a thing. “Do you ever think about how you will die? When you will die? Or even how?” I say slowly as if I’m speaking about the weather. “I do, sometimes I even imagine it. I know that seems weird but I do. Mostly I think about it when I’m alone, looking at the trees. I hope my death is unique and something that no one’s heard before I want to feel numb when I die so I won’t feel the pain. I want a pain free death.”
He looks at me, really looks at me this time. He assesses me with a look that I cannot place but I know isn’t a look of adoration. He shakes his head, “No I don’t” he says simply.” Sammi is looking at me as well from the front seat, her eyes are hard and she’s frowning at me.
“Why are you doing this?” Sammi asked she’s not frowning now; she looks sad. I shrug again not knowing what the big fuss is about I was just asking a question.
“Are you OK?” Mitch asks, his eyes are distant as if he’s afraid. Afraid of what I might do when I’m alone. I don’t want him to worry.
“I’m fine. Really.” I state smiling to prove it.
“OK, if you say so” but he doesn’t look convinced, he leaves me be and goes back to humming alone to the radio.
I notice Sammi is still looking at me with a worry filled expression on her face. She tugs on the hem on her shirt before turning to the front. Justin looks at me from the rear view mirror his expression solemn and his taps on the steering wheel rhythmically, I stare back the wind is blowing wildly and a few strands of my pony tail fall out. He looks away first, his face scrunched up as if to say, Why? Why death?
Although death seems a long way away I still can’t help but wonder. I wonder if there’s a heaven and if there is what it would look like. My image of heaven is filled with angels and the soft sound of birds singing and the breeze through your hair. That’s heaven for me. I lean my head on Mitch’s shoulder, breathing in his scent and let myself drift into sleep.
Hi my pretties sorry for leaving it there but I have a ton of assignment and exams to get a work on but fear not I will update every week.
