chapter 16 || you're safe

"Y/N! Y/N! Y/N!" Minho's voice rang, shaking me up and down. I opened my eyes slightly, looking at me surroundings. 

The sky became a dark blue, and some stars were visible in the sky. Thomas looked a bit groggily too, as if he was also just woken up.

"Wake up you shanks! We gotta go!" Minho yelled at me and Thomas.

Our helicopter had begun slowing down and dropping to the floor. A large warehouse was in view, soldiers and lights visible.

"Let's go! Come on!" Minho said as he was being escorted by a guard dressed in all black. A line of us followed after him, Newt infront of me and Thomas behind. 

"Wait! Wait! Wait!" I heard Thomas yell from behind me. I quickly grabbed a hold of Newt's arm, making him wait with me for Thomas.

"Where are you going?" I shouted at Thomas as he ran back into the helicopter.

"Cranks! We've got Cranks!" I heard a guard yell over his walkie-talkie. Cranks? What the shuck were Cranks?

"We've gotta move, kid! It isn't safe out here!" A guard shouted at me and Newt.

"Thomas! Come on!" I yelled.

He quickly ran out, motioning us to run towards the warehouse. Once we were all finally in, I got a better look at us. We all looked horrible, Our hair was matted, cuts were along out faces, and dirt and grime was all over our bodies.

A man with greyish white hair began walking towards us. A warm smile plastered onto his face.

"He looks like a rat" Minho whispered to me. I began laughing causing a quick glare from Newt for me to shut up.

"You kids doing alright? I'm sorry about the fuss out there, we had a bit of a swarm after us" The Rat looking man said.

"Who are you?" I questioned, moving towards the front of the group. Newt and Minho following behind me.

"I'm the reason you're still alive, it's my intention to keep it that way. Now come with me. We'll get you all squared away" He stated. We quickly followed the man as he lead us all throughout the warehouse.

"You can call me, Mr. Janson" The man said aloud. "I run this place. For us it is a sanctuary, safe from the horrors of the outside world. Kind of a home between homes" 

"That means you're taking us home?" I asked, an exciting feeling running through my body. 

"A home of sorts. Sadly, there wouldn't be much of where you came from. But we created a place for you. A place safe from the scorch, where WCKD won't find you again. How does that sound?" He said with a warm smile.

"Why are you helping us?" Thomas asked.

"Let's just say the world out there is in a rather precarious situation. The fact that you kids can survive the Flare virus makes you the best chance of humanity's survival. Unfortunately, that makes you all a greater target." He stated. "Now, beyond these doors lie the beginning of your new lives"

Janson opened the door to a newly lit room that had white walls around it, blueish white lights shown throughout the room.

"First things first, let's do something about that smell" He said, showing us to a bathroom. 

Showers lined all across the bathroom, one side for the girls, and one side for the guys. 

I walked into the shower, the walls exposing my head and neck only. The warm water rushed right onto my body, washing away all of the dirt and grime down the drain. My skin became clear and my hair began to detangle. 

"This feels amazing" I said to Teresa as both of our hair began to cooperate. 

The boys were having joyous conversations and were laughing across the bathroom.

Stepping out of the shower, the cold air quickly welcomed me, making me shiver. They gave us new clothing. A white shirt and cargos to change into, with new shoes to wear.

As we all filed out of the bathroom, Janson was outside waiting.

"We have to take you guys to the medical wings for some check ups, You'll get dinner right after" He said, taking us to the medical wing.

They sat me on a cot, putting Teresa in one right across from mine. I made eye contact with Newt, a hint of fear could be seen through his eyes.

"Y/N?" I heard a nurse say to me, I quickly looked at her and nodded. She wrote something down before closing the curtain to my section of the medical wing.

"Wait, can I ask Newt something?" I asked the nurse, trying to get off the cot.

"You'll be able to see him after, right now we need you to stay put. We just need to run some tests to make sure you're okay" She said reassuringly. 

"This will only pinch" She said before jabbing a needle into my arm

"Ouch!" I yelped, wincing from the pain. 

The tests seemed to go on forever and the needles seemed to never stop. 

"Okay! You're ready to go!" She said, motioning me towards a cafeteria. 

I walked in, our group sitting at a table, all of them seemingly done with their tests and already devouring all of their food.

"Y/N!" Newt exclaimed, quickly getting up from his seat and walking over to me.

"Hi" I said tiredly, the tests seemed to tire me down.

"Are you okay? They didn't hurt you, did they?" He asked, checking my body.

"Yes, I'm fine. Just a little tired" I replied. The blond put his arm around my lower back region, motioning me towards the table that they all sat at. 

"Here, we got your food for you" Fry said with a smile.

"Thank you" I said, sitting down and beginning to eat my food.

The food tasted amazing at it began to move down my throat. My stomach began to be filled with the hot food and a smile grew on my lips.

"Hey! Y/N!" Minho shouted at me, throwing a piece of bread from across the table.

"Minho!" I shouted, throwing back a piece of broccoli that lay on my plate. 

Our whole group began laughing as we threw pieces of food at each other, all of us happily eating and joking around with one another.

This was what I imagined for my future. This is all I wanted for my future. Surrounded by the people I love.
