The rays of sun that peeked into my bedroom each morning woke me up. I rubbed my tired eyes and looked over my shoulder. I was surprised to find the side beside me still empty. Last night after we returned, Dante met with Esmeralda and Myung. I went to sleep alone for the second time this week.
I rubbed my hand over the cold sheets beside me. I could not help but wonder... was he still mad? I heaved a sigh and stepped out of the bed. I walked over to the balcony doors and opened them. The warm breeze fanned my face. The serene quiet was a good change from the city. Our bedroom overlooked a large garden and the ocean. I smiled when I spotted Dante sitting on the swinging bench. He was petting his dog as he looked out at the ocean. He looked so peaceful. I was surprised to see his usual suit and tie attire was gone. In its place were a pair of white linen pants and a brown linen shirt. His hair was flowing freely with the wind instead of being held back with gel.
He looked so handsome.
I immediately rushed back into the bedroom and slid on my slippers before running down the stairs. I rushed toward the garden but stopped when I noticed Samantha walking toward Dante. I quietly moved close enough to hear them. She handed Dante a glass mug before sitting down beside him.
"Penny for your thoughts?" She mused with a teasing smile.
"I don't feel like talking Sam," he replied before taking a sip of his drink.
Samantha looked amused rather than offended. "You know, that is one thing you have yet to work on."
"Huh?"
"Do not think I did not notice the tension between you and Stephanie last night. What did you do this time?" Samantha raised a brow knowingly.
"I did not do anything," Dante said defensively. Samantha narrowed her eyes at him and he heaved a sigh. "I lied to her about my plans for Vladimir. Now, she thinks I do not trust her."
"Well, do you?"
"Huh?" Dante looked dumbfounded.
"Do you trust her Dante?" Samantha asked the question again. This time her tone was much more serious.
I could feel my heart beating faster. A burning feeling spread in my chest all the way to my sweaty palms.
"I do," he confessed. "I trust her with my whole life. I just don't trust myself or this world. The look on her face when she saw what I did... it made me feel like the monster everyone says I am. For the first time in my life, I truly regretted my actions."
I could feel my heart clench upon hearing his words. His actions were extreme, but I did not think of him as a monster. I knew what a monster really was and Dante was far from that.
