prologue

The trees swayed with Alex as she danced underneath their large branches, covered with blossoms. Her long dress hit the dewdrops as she twirled with the nyads, giggling along like they had just gossiped about nothing and everything.

She loved the magic of the sun shining through the holes of the canopy as she ran across the mossy ground, keeping her cool in the summer heat.

She came to a clearing and dropped to the ground, basking in the warmth of the air. The smell of fresh flowers blooming in the field just down the hill tinged the air. She stared at the treetops for a moment, sitting in a comfortable silence.

Just as the breeze had lulled her to sleep, a twig broke and snapped Alexandra out of her trance. She stood up quickly, backing against a tree, her swords out and ready.

"Who's there?"

Another twig broke, and her head whipped towards the sound. A noble lion emerged from behind a great oak, rustling its mane. Alex smiled and ran forward, hugging him around his neck.

"Aslan! You're back!"

She smiled so widely that her cheeks hurt, and she jumped with excitement. "I have to tell Peter, oh and Lucy! They'll be so pleased!"

The great lion opened its mouth, and Alex flinched at the volume of his voice. "Awake, dear one."

She scrunched her eyebrows and rubbed her eyes. She had to have heard him wrong. "I am awake..."

The lion almost smiled, which Alexandra quickly brushed past, and simply repeated itself. "Awake, dear one."

"But-"

He let out a great roar, and Alex jumped. Her eyes opened quickly, and she saw Susan standing by her bedside, her face full of worry.

"Get up, Alex! Get up!"
