“DETECTIVE BIBLE!” After shouting his name, I ran towards him.
“Build.” He smiled at me.
“Hi.” He’s not alone. He’s with his partner--- Davon. So, I greeted him as well. “Hi, Detective Davon.”
“Hi, Build.” Davon.
“Who’s with you?” Bible asked.
“I’m with my boss and my coworkers. They are inside. I just went out to breathe fresh air,” I answered, then smiled at him.
“I’m going inside first,” Davon announced. Bible just nodded at him. So, Davon nodded at me as well before facing his back at us and started to walk to go inside.
“Have you been here for awhile?” Bible asked when Davon left our sight.
I nodded. “As soon as we finished our shift, we got here right away.”
Bible faintly nodded his head, before smiling at me. “How are you feeling? You okay?” I can vividly hear the concern in his voice. I stifle myself from smiling widely.
“I have too. And this wasn’t the first time I lost someone close to me. I’ve already even lost my family. So, it’s not that hard for me to move on. But I wish the heartless person who took their lives mercilessly would perish.”
Bible didn’t respond right away. So, I spoke again. “I have to be okay. That’s the only thing I can do to survive this messy world. I have already accepted the fact that there’s no such thing as permanent. Someone or something will come, but sooner or later they will leave. And I can’t do anything about that. I’ll be sad, but I’ll be okay, because that’s how life works. I have already embraced that reality.”
“I’m not leaving you,” Bible said, stating a promise.
You’re not the first person who promised me that, Bible. But now they are gone.
So, I shook my head. “Please, don’t say that. We have no idea what will happen in the future. Whether we like it or not, one of us might go. Don’t state a promise like that. I don’t want to end up hurting in the end because of hope. Let’s just embrace reality.”
And I smiled a sigh of relief when Bible nodded in agreement.
“You’re right. Let’s not state promises. So, I’ll just do it. I will not promise you, Build, but I will do my best to stay by your side as long as I can.” I can clearly hear the sincerity in his voice.
“That sounds better.” Then I smiled again at him. “You want me to accompany you inside? Detective Davon might be waiting for you.”
He just nodded as his response. Then we walked to go inside in abreast.
I’m sorry, Bible. I really like you, but I can’t just let myself get attached to someone again. I’m afraid of getting hurt in the end. That kind of pain is terrifying.
Bible
DAVON and I have decided to drop by at Saetang’s residence to send our condolences to the Saetang family for their lost. We didn’t plan to stay long, but I didn’t expect that I would see Build here.
So, I ended up staying to accompany Build, even though he had his comrades to accompany him. I just can’t leave him here. I want to stay beside him. So, I let Davon leave first and let him use my car, since we only used my car going here. He left his car at the headquarters, because we planned to go back. We’re not yet done working. I’ll just commute to the office later.
