Backpacks loaded with supplies and weapons ready, I follow the growling sounds of the gateway into a small treelined space behind the cabin with my friends close behind, Eddie refusing to let go of my hand as we trundled through the dampened leaves and mud. Standing before the gate, I could hear the collecting heartbeats of those around me begin to pound through their chests as they internally pep-up and ready themselves for what's about to come. "Once we're in, this gate will close. As soon as it's done, or if we get into any danger, I'll open a return one and we'll get out!" Everyone looks uneasy, but they all understand that there is no other option. Leading the way through, one-by-one we crawl through the small gateway set into the trunk of a tree into the place not a single one of us could ever have imagined we'd repeatedly find ourselves in.Come out the other side, the air is calm, unusually calm. No sign of beasts or bats, no lightening or slick vines attacking our feet. Nothing. Just a rundown carbon copy of the Hawkins we'd just left behind us. Walking in a unified silence through the vine scattered woods, we find ourselves at the tree line that edges the main road through town. Looking up at the open and darkened sky, there's not a single threat to be seen. Vecna knew we were coming, he's been expecting us this whole time. Wherever he's waiting, he wants us to track him and fall right into whatever sick trap he has ready for us. "Anyone feel like it's a little too normal down here?" Robin senses it too, the weirdest place we've ever been now doesn't seem that weird at all. I don't know if telling them will help, or hinder the situation. But leaving them to walk into their deaths doesn't seem to great either. I sigh as I ready myself to deliver the blow, "He knows. He knows I'm not on his side, he's known since last night. He's weaker without his soldier, I can feel it." That wasn't even the worst part of what I had to tell them and I could already hear their unease, Steve and Mike going as far as vocalising their distain. "He knows we're coming for him too... I know where to find him, but he's waiting for us." I feel my eyes prick with warm tears as I deliver the worst news I could ever give them. "What're we waiting for then? If we know where he is that makes us as ready as he is!" I'm so glad I've got Eddie beside me, he was right, at least we weren't facing any random attacks anymore.
Like an awful montage scene from a movie, we walk without distraction or danger across town to the derelict street that the old Creel house sits pride of place in the centre of. The closer we get to the house, the louder the screeching of the bats perched on the rooftop gets. As we approached the Creel house, I felt the hairs on the back of my neck stand on end - he knew we were here, he's watching us... but from where? We didn't have to wait long for that answer as his tall and menacing stature became apart on the roof of the house. Standing in place on the centre of the roof surrounded by his bats and vines, his glaring, icy eyed gaze turned to fix on us as we approached. "Very disappointed in you, 005... after everything I've given you, you turn your back on me?" the booming tones of Vecnas gravely voice travelled through the thick atmosphere, "I gave you life, gave you power, gave you purpose... without me, you are nothing!" He was wrong, I wasn't nothing, I already had a purpose - Eddie helped me see that when he found me in the woods. "It's over, Peter. We're done. You're done!" I growled as my hand reached for the holt of my sword, seemingly the only thing that can really put an end to this.
Raining his clawed hand, the bats sat idly hissing and screeching on the rooftop began their intimidating cyclone above us, readying their attack. We were prepared this time, nail enforced shields wielded alongside guns, spears and knives, or nail-bat in Steve case, ready for the incoming onslaught of those demonic bats. Each bat that swooped down at us what obliterated one-by-one but quickly replaced by another, guns and grunts combining with screeches littered the air with chaotic noise. "Baker! You gotta get to Vecna, it's the only way to stop the bats!" Dustin called out as he swung his spear into the chest of a low flying bat. I nodded knowingly as I took a deep breath, the searing pain of tearing flesh as my tattered wings tore free from my skin. Vecna wasn't the only one weakened by my reclaimed identity, I was no longer impervious to the screeching sounds of the bats or the agonising sensation of my wings tearing through my skin.
