The Old Country

By iliamah

"Mom, how was the old country?" said the child to the lady ploughing the field. The woman's eyes shone.

"Our island was beautiful, we had crystals that stored energy from the sun, powered boats and warmed our houses, but we became greedy. As a result, our land perished and sunk into the sea. Only you, grandma and I survived. This plateau we live in is what remains of it".

While drying their sweat, the grandma replied intently, "Ancient story, our real old country didn't sink in the sea, it exploded and birthed stars, but your mom was a toddler then".
