Big Bang!

They said it all started with a big explosion.
Maybe a supernova explosion. Something big enough to generate lots of energy.
Three dozen generations now. It had taken three dozen generations of tenacious scientists to calculate the point of origin, sort of ground zero of the formation of the Universe as we know it today.
Three dozen generations of men and women who have developed many theories. The predominant one, the Big Bang, had made the headlines of all national and international news outlets.
The Big Bang... The theory would be proven true shortly now.
We were all glued to the screens and openings with direct views on the sky.
Tonight.
Tonight the world as we know it, the dark omnipresent sky would be lighted for the first time in many generations.
The birth of the Universe. The intense light needed eons to reach humanity, bathing the void of space in the incandescence of the death of an old star.
From the colonies on Mars to the outpost on Alpha Centauri, the remnants of mankind that had spread all over the galaxy were expectant. The light would come. The light would clean. The light would mark a new beginning...

But they didn't think it would all end in a big illumination.
The calculations had been accurate, and the birth of the Universe reached all colonies and inhabited planets. It also brought mayhem and extinction.
From the three dozen generations of scientists, not many remained. Their eyes turned towards the land and the people.
They had calculated the time for the light to reach them. But when it was time for the sound to turn up, there was no one to tell if it really made a big Bang...
