Chapter 9: Cured

Virgil quickly got bored in the bunker, half of his days were spent in pain, a quarter in confusion on how normal bodies worked, and the last was spent missing his friends. This was his last day in the bunker, then he would be able to go back to the bunker and more importantly back to Roman. Meanwhile Patton is trying to calm down Roman, who is pacing back and forth in anticipation. "Ro, it's fine he's coming back today! And you know he doesn't miss things!" Patton says, trying to get the other to calm down.

"But what if he doesn't?! What if he finds another group of friends and leaves us behind?!" Roman exclaimed, panicking as he walked back and forth in the living room. Logan walks in and stands beside Patton.

"Patton is correct, he has always been on time with things and he would not miss seeing you for anything." Logan says in his usual monotone voice. "In addition, he does seem more trusting and has higher level of hedonia." When Roman looks confused Logan explains, "I assume you are confused with what the word means. Hedonia refers to the presence of positive emotion, such as happiness or euphoria, instead of negative emotions like sadness, depression, or anxiety."

"Okay, and you're certain he's coming back TODAY, right?" Roman asks, having stopped pacing and turning his head to face Logan. Logan nods, pushing his glasses up.

"Yes, however if he does not show up for another day we should go see what happened." Logan states as Roman visibly relaxes and nods. Patton smiles as he goes over to Roman and hugs him, Logan smiles a little as he watches Roman struggle to pry Patton off of him. "You truly care for Virgil, I've never even you express such concern for Patton or I. May I ask why you care for him so much?"

"Well...I don't really know, I just feel like I understand him more than anyone else and he understands me more than anyone else too. I don't really know why I care about him more than anyone else I know." Roman says, honestly while Logan of reasons that could be while Patton's eyes light up. "What is it, Pat?"

"You love Virgil!! You love him so much!!" Patton exclaimed happily as he bounced up and down. Roman looks surprised and considers it as Logan thinks about it for a bit.

"Patton does have a point. Your heart accelerates when you are around Virgil and you seem to sweat and stutter some times when around him. Have you ever thought of the possibility of you liking him?" Logan questioned as he looked at Roman. Roman nodded and Logan thought for a bit. "Have you ever considered asking him to be your significant other?"

"He's not going to feel the same, ever, Logan." Roman states as he looked out the window waiting for Virgil to get back. Virgil left the old bunker with his bat in hand, he looked at his pale skin wondering if the pale was because of little sun or the skin zombies had. Virgil started the long walk to the place the others were, thinking about everything he and Roman would do once he got back there. As he walked he pulled off his bat from his back when he heard a noise. Virgil continues to walk until someone rushes to him and he hits the person with the bat and starts to run. After a few minutes someone grabs his arm and puts a cloth over his mouth and nose. Virgil tries to fight before passing out.

"Roman. You are pacing again." Logan states as Roman began pacing again after a few hours.

"The sun is setting Logan! And Virgil hasn't come back yet! What if the cure didn't work?! What if he was taken somewhere?!" Roman asked as he paced faster with more panic setting in. Logan sighs and considers it before answering his questions.

"If either of the two options had happened we would be going to make sure. We can go see in the morning, when it's safer to go outside and find things. So go to sleep and we will depart in the morning." Logan states as he walks off to his room leaving Roman there as the sun has almost completely set. Roman looks out the window and gets an idea. He takes his bat and some knives before leaving the bunker when everyone else falls asleep. He walks down the path for a while before getting to a place where he sees feet tracks and Virgil's baseball bat.

"I knew something was wrong." Roman thought as he tried to find a clue of where they would have gone. He walks around, picking Virgil's bat up to give back to him. After some time he finds muddy footprints leading off into the more dangerous part of the forest. He takes a deep breath before walking into the woods. As he goes he hears a twig snap and instantly points a knife to it. "What?...Patton?! Why are you here?!" Roman asked, putting the knife down.

"You don't worry like that when everything is fine. And you left so I wanted to help get Virgil back!" Patton says holding his sledgehammer as the two continued in the way of the foot prints. After some time and having to fight off several zombies, they get to an old abandoned cottage surrounded by a rotten picket fence. Roman kicks the fence down before storming up to the house. "Don't worry kiddo! I'll stand guard no one else will get in!" Patton says cheerfully, Roman smiles and nods at him before turning back to the door and scowling. Roman opens the door and walks in, seeing a group of men holding weapons around a beaten and bloody Virgil as a familiar person sits on the couch in amusement.

"Oh~ come on now, you aren't that weak are you?" Regina ask walking over to him and kicking his neck, making Virgil cough blood and pass out. And that was the last straw as Roman threw a knife stabbing Regina in the shoulder. The group of men look at him in anger before fear seeing him holding more knives.

"Now you listen to me and you listen well. All of you step away from him before I kill each and every one of you in this house before anyone can find you." Roman states as he walks over to them. "Well, at least you're lucky enough to hear my voice instead of screams, huh?" Roman asks before the men looked to see knives lodged into their throats. Roman stabs Regina in the chest before taking the all to another room and taking the knives back and locking the door before leaving the bodies alone.
