The Caw of the Crows

Chapter One.

This is the first story I have ever writen! :D

My lungs are going to explode!

I can’t run anymore.

The ground of the forest floor is completely covered with leaves and mud.

Ouch! And those tree branches hurt like hell when you run into them, I think as I look at the cut on my arm.

“Scarlett!” I hear a familiar voice screaming, “Wake up!”

Pulled out of my dream, soaking in sweat and shivering, I look up to see my sister staring at me worriedly. “Scarlett, are you having those dreams again?” she asked, her bright sapphire eyes looked worried. Her dark brown wavy hair was around her face.

“Maybe.” I say looking away from her, making a curtain out of my black hair. “Violet, they become more and more vivid each time, they are going to find out. That’s what I am running from. I just know it.”

“Scarlett, they are not going to find out. I will keep you safe we have stayed safe this long haven’t we?” she asked me, lifting my chin up to look at her. My emerald eyes meeting her sapphire ones. They seem so confident, it’s hard not to give in and believe her even though she is only 16 two years younger than my 18.

“Okay,” I say, trying to make her and myself feel better, “let’s go back to sleep. We have to move in the morning, we have been here for over a month, people will start noticing that I am different soon” I say this as I lay back down and Vi goes back to her own bed.

“I miss mum and dad.” Vi says, looking at me from her bed.

“I know I miss them too.” Our parents died in a terrible car crash two years ago, and with no family, left us to fend for ourselves. We have to move on again because every time I have a bad vision I have a tendency to help the people in it by telling them not to go to the place it happens. Then, of course, people think I am weird and wonder how I know these things and soon they will notice me and they will find out about what I can do.

It’s my job to find a safe place for my sister and I to live, somewhere they won’t find us. My thoughts start to become fuzzy and I fall into a dreamless sleep.

Waking up mid-morning, Violet has made breakfast and coffee. After quickly scoffing them down and getting ready to leave, we hit the road with our few bags that contain our belongings. It isn’t much, but it’s all we need to survive.

“So, where are we headed?” Vi asks me from the passenger’s seat.

“I’m thinking we should stop at the next small town and find somewhere to stay.” I say keeping my eyes on the road.

“Scarlett, when are we going to be able to settle down in one place and stop moving?” She asks me, starring at me.

“As soon as we can find somewhere safe. Then we can settle down. It won’t be long now, I know that much.” I spare a quick glance at my sister and see a little glimmer of hope in her bright eyes. She lays back into her seat and stares out the window. The rest of the car ride is in a nice comfortable silence.

It’s late evening before I see a sign stating we are 25km from the next town. Vi is asleep and I can feel myself getting sleepy too. I can barely keep my eyes open. But I must stay awake.......

The next thing I know is that my car is rolling down a hill. And it just keeps rolling.

“Violet!” I scream as I hit my head on the steering wheel, I feel something warm and wet crawl down my face. I feel really dizzy. Violet didn’t respond to me. The car rolls a few more times then finally makes one last roll and lands on its roof.  Violet is just hanging from her seatbelt her body like a doll. In a panic I try to undo my seat belt to get to Violet but I can’t get it to come undone and the dizziness I feel increases horribly.

The last thing I see before I pass out is that Violet is unconscious. And someone ripping the door of the car off.

Then I am dragged under into the darkness.
