Lumine POV:
She was running through the forest when she overheard two people talking about a topic that piqued her interest-a lot. A tall ginger guy and a tall blonde girl were talking about the Fatui, thinking that nobody could hear them. Despite not wanting to be nosy, Lumine couldn't help but listen in.
"...decided not to show, hm?" the girl said, sighing. "That little brat."
"Yeah, well, nothing we can do about it," the ginger grumbled. "Anyways, Signora, what did you want to talk about?" Why are they acting like this is some super duper important meeting? Maybe they're part of a club? But why would they meet in the middle of the woods instead of in a classroom?
"How much progress have you made?" Signora asked. Definitely a club.
"Little to none," the ginger guy said, running a hand through his hair.
"That isn't good...the Tsaritsa told us to try to get all of the gnosis by the end of the year," Signora picked at her nails. "Might have made more progress if Scaramouche would collaborate."
Tsaritsa? Isn't that what they call the ruler of Snezhnaya? Are they Fatui? No way, there's no way high schoolers are Fatui. Probably just what they call the manager of their club. But what is a gnosis? Argh, dammit, I should probably stop eavesdro-
"Any more news from the diplomats?" the ginger guy-Lumine still didn't know his name-asked.
"No."
"Ugh, damn, it's so boring here," the ginger complained. "No fighting, no bloodshed, no death. I'd rather be back on the battlefield setting houses on fire or something."
Lumine's blood ran cold at those words. What kind of club promoted death and arson? Or were they really...
"I'd never question the Tsaritsa's decisions, but honestly, appointing a whiny, stupid brat like you to 11th chair? You're just making us Harbingers seem like fools," Signora snapped. Lumine felt like her soul was leaving her body-both out of fear and anger. Why are there criminals here, in this school?! I know Paimon said that they accepted students of all backgrounds, but I didn't think they'd accept monsters! Suddenly, her hiding place behind a tree felt very, very exposed.
"Hey-you know what, I'm done talking to you!" the ginger huffed, stomping off.
"Same to you!" Signora yelled, also stomping off.
Lumine's head was racing with thoughts. First off, she hadn't expected the Fatui Harbingers to be so young and immature. They acted for little kids, for Archon's sake! And second off, she had always hoped to meet them on the battlefield, fighting against them, and taking them down. Instead, she was meeting -well, seeing-them in a high school, hiding behind a tree. How embarrassing. But those thoughts were only thoughts to try to keep the real one from barging through-why were they here? The Fatui Harbingers had built themselves a fearsome reputation on the battlefield-slaughtering soldiers without hesitation, using torture methods to pry information, and leading the charge on destroying cities. So why were three of them at a high school? And how were they even accepted? Then she felt the rage she had expected to feel, laying eyes on the Fatui. While it was impossible for one of those three to have led the charge on her hometown since they were about her age, and it was kind of hard imagining a little kid commanding soldiers to kill-they were still associated with the person who had. What should I do? I want to rip them all to shreds, but I know I can't. They don't enjoy such a feared reputation for no reason. But I can't leave them alone, either. They obviously have some evil plan, or they wouldn't be here. Maybe I should just tell the principal. Yeah, that's it. And Aether. He needs to know to stay away from those guys. The ringing bell snapped Lumine out of her thoughts. Great Archons, I'm gonna be really really late! I'm in the middle of the woods and have no idea where my class is! Wait, what was my next class again? She quickly snuck a look at her schedule.Lumine Ying: Grade 11
1st Period: Self-Defense, Dierdre Kaze
2nd Period: Math, Raiden Ei
3rd Period: Science, Nahida Kusanali
4th Period: History, Zhongli Morax
LUNCH
5th Period: ELA, Yae Miko
6th Period: Band, Venti Barbatos
7th Period: Weapon Mastery, Wenxu Aoi
8th Period: Free PeriodShe frowned a bit at some of her teacher's last names. Aren't Ei, Kusanali, Morax, and Barbatos the names of Archons? There's no way they're actually Archons; they all died a few centuries ago or something. Maybe just weird family names. Whatever, I gotta run, I'm already late, she thought, stuffing her schedule back inside her backpack. Besides, she had more pressing matters to think about than some weird last names. How am I gonna find the principal? I have no idea who the principal even is. And should I really do anything about the Fatui? If they're really as powerful as the rumors say they are, then I stand no chance. Omph! She crashed into a tree, courtesy of not looking at where she was running. Rubbing her sore nose, she kept on running and grumbled about random things.
About 5 minutes later, she stumbled into her math class, all out of breath. Ms. Raiden was in the middle of calling attendance and just motioned for her to sit down at an empty seat. Yeah, there's no way that's an Archon, she thought to herself after looking at Ms. Raiden for a couple of seconds. While she was exceptionally pretty, nothing about her radiated any sort of godliness. She plunked her stuff down on a chair in the back corner and sighed. Math was by far her least favorite subject, and with her recent discovery of the Fatui Harbingers, she had even more trouble concentrating on what Ms. Raiden was saying. Luckily, it seemed today was just a "get to know each other" day, with no assignments. She pulled out a blank notebook from her bag and started writing down everything she already knew about the Fatui Harbingers at the school
Name: Ginger guy
Grade: ???
Age: ???
Rank: 11
Height: Taller than SignoraName: Signora
Grade: ???
Age: ???
Rank: ???
Height: Taller than meName: Scaramouche
Grade: ???
Age: ???
Rank: ???
Height: ???Wow, I have so much information, she thought grumpily. She didn't even know that ginger guy's name, only his rank and that he was taller than Signora. As for Scaramouche, she had no idea what he even looked like. And she could barely think with the noise level inside the classroom; Ms. Raiden didn't seem to care how loud the students got, as long as they followed the rules, since the teacher was currently reading a book while her students made more noise than a bomb exploding right next to her ear. She sighed and closed her notebook, then stuffed it back into her bag. According to the clock that hung from the wall, there were about 20 minutes left of class. Then, it was time to hunt down the Science classroom, which was also taught by someone who had an Archon last name, Kusanali. The history books all said that while Kusanali was alive, she hadn't received much respect from her people, who still believed that R Archon-Lumine could never remember her name-to be their true god.
But then again, the history books also said that Beelzubub-or Raiden-was an unforgiving Archon that would strike down their enemies in a single merciless hit. The woman in front of her seemed to be capable of nothing of the sort. She spent the rest of class dozing off, even though she wasn't the least bit sleepy. The bell ringing almost gave her a heart attack again, which couldn't be good for her health, but whatever. She grabbed her bag and zoomed out of the class, not wishing to be late for another period. In the hallway, she saw Aether, and quickly pulled him aside.
"Hey, what's up?" Aether asked.
"So, I know this is gonna be hard to believe, but-"
"Yeah, I already know. Kadenokouji Kenzaburou is a teacher here."
"Wait what-well, that isn't what I wanted to tell you," Lumine said.
"Then what is it?"
"There are Fatui Harbingers inside this school."
