𝐘/𝐧'𝐬 𝐏𝐎𝐕𝐄𝐕𝐄𝐑𝐘𝐁𝐎𝐃𝐘 was eventually sat in their seats and the class had shortly begun. The lesson started out as normal as any other class would if there was a new professor taking it - with Moody introducing himself.
"Alastor Moody." The professor began as he turned around to pick up a piece of chalk and write his name on the chalkboard. "Ex Auror, Ministry malcontent and your new Defence Against the Dark Arts teacher. I am here because Dumbledore asked me. End of story, goodbye, the end. Any questions?"
If I was being completely honest I wanted to raise my hand and ask about his time working as an Auror but refrained as he scared me quite a bit.
"When it comes to the Dark Arts I believe in a practical approach. But first, which one of you can tell me how many Unforgivable Curses there are?" Moody questioned the class but nobody raised their hand.
Hermione called out across the class, with a look of full complete discomfort written all over her face. "Three, sir." In a situation like so, if Hermione seemed on edge you'd know there was something that was wrong.
"And they are so named?" Moody asked as he turned to the chalkboard behind himself and began writing almost as quickly as a niffler can steal gold.
"Because they are unforgivable. The use of any one of them will-" Before Hermione could finish the question the professor has asked, he interrupted her to complete her sentence.
"Will earn you a one-way ticket to Azkaban, correct. Now, the Ministry says you're too young to see what these curses do, I say different! You need to know what you're up against. You need to be prepared. You need to find another place to put your chewing gum beside the underside of your desk, Mr Finnigan!" The teacher continued to raise his voice as he turned apple very quickly.
Everybody turned their attention towards Seamus who was indeed sticking his chewing gum underneath the desk he was sitting at, which was quite gross. Seamus rolled his eyes at this and turned to the person next to him, "No way. The old codger can see out the back of his head."
At that, Moody quickly turned himself around a threw the chalk in his hand directly at the Gryffindor, only narrowly missing him. "And hear across classrooms!" He shouted at the boy who had his hands over his head before continuing his lesson.
"So which curse shall we see first? Weasley!" Moody stood in front of the desk Ronald and Harry were both sitting at, frightening Ron as he shouted the ginger's name.
Ronald responded with a shaky 'yes' before the professors instructed him to stand. My nerves were only increasing as I watched Ron slowly and fearfully stand out of his seat, his legs were visibly shaking.
"Give us a curse," Moody instructed the boy to do as he stares directly down at him. It took Ron a few seconds before mustering up the courage to get a singular word out, which I didn't blame him for. I knew each house had its own set of traits but pinning them as your personality definitely wasn't the brightest idea.
Ronald answered the teacher by pointing out one of the curses that his father had told him about. This earned a remark from Moody about how his father gave the Ministry trouble a few years back, leaving most to assume that Arthur Weasley had done something bad in relation to that specific curse.
Moody walks over to his desk, which was covered with critters and bugs in jars. He opens one of the jars to pull out a creepy-looking spider before enlarging it with the Engorgio charm. Once it was bigger he cast the Imperius curse on the critter, taking control of its every movement and making it do some obscure things.
First Moody made it jump onto Crabbe's face, which made me almost jump out of my seat - I looked like an idiot leaning over to the next table just to keep myself away from the disgusting critter. Moody burst out into a fit of laughter as the class erupted into nervous giggles while he continued to make the spider jump from person to person.
After it had landed on Ronald's head Moody had no problem with throwing the spider onto my arm which made me quiver my lip in fear. I pulled my face away from my arm, literally leaning on Crabbe as the spider began walking up my arm.
Malfoy laughed at my fearful expression which made Professor Moody turn to look at him. "What are you laughing at?" And with that, Moody through the spider directly onto Malfoy's face which made me burst out into a fit of laughter as he began yelling at Goyle to get it off him.
"Talented isn't she? What should I have her do next? Jump out the window?" Moody moved his wand in the direction of the window before hovering the spider over a bucket of water. "Drown herself?"
The class had been completely drained of laughter, watching the events unfold. The curse showed the lack of mobility a living thing had against the curse, which was truly horrific, being in your right mind but unable to control the movements you make.
Moody brought the spider back over to him and rested it in his free hand before turning to look at the incredibly quiet students. "Scores of witches and wizards have claimed that they only did You-Know-Who's bidding under the influence of the Impreius Curse. But here is the rub: How do we sort out the liars?"
Moody have the class a few seconds to think over what he had just said, leaving Hermione and me to look at one another - both mirroring the exact same look of unsettlement and uncertainty on our faces.
Moody requested for the class to tell him another curse and shockingly quite a few people raised their hands to answer his question. The most surprising being Neville. I still remember last year the conversation he and I had about his parents and I had a gut feeling that this wouldn't be good for him to talk about.
It's almost as if Moody had waited for Neville to raise his hand as he called him up straight away. "Professor Sprout tells me you have an aptitude for herbology."
"There's the Cruciatus Curse," Neville said to Moody and all I could really do was slouch down on my seat as the Professor instructed Neville to come over to his desk.
"Particularly nasty. The torture curse." Moody looked up at Neville who was now standing at the opposite side of the teacher's desk to him. Moody pointed his wand down at the spider and chanted the horrific charm, "Crucio!"
The spider let out a little screeching noise which unsettled everybody inside the room, especially Neville who was watching the spider shrivel up from the immense pain it was enduring. Anybody who knew Neville could see the clear discomfort in his body language.
"Stop it! Can't you see it's bothering him? Stop it!" Hermione shouted from her seat at the Professor, which was completely unlike her. Moody looked up from the spider he was currently torturing to look at Hermione and then to Neville and with that, he released the curse from the arachnid.
Moody picked up the spider and walked passed Neville who stayed standing at the teacher's desk. The professor placed the spider down on Hermione's desk - the witch close to tears after watching her friend suffer through past trauma.
"Perhaps you could give us the last Unforgivable Curse, Miss Granger." Moody requested, to which she quickly shook her head. "No? Avada Kedavra!" And with that a green light shot out of the professor's wand, hitting the spider and killing it within an instant.
"The Killing Curse. Only one person is known to have survived it and he's sitting in this room." Moody stalked over to Harry and looked directly down at him before pulling the same flask he had at dinner out, to drink the contents inside.
