Chapter 7: He Likes Me Back?!
Here I was with a gun to my head and you would think that I would do something to get out of this situation but for some reason I was frozen in place. I know I'm supposed to do something to get out of his grip but for some reason I just cannot move. I could feel the cold metal up against my temple but I could not for the life of me move a single muscle to get free.
“Why are y’all in my house?!” A masculine voice questioned from behind me. This seemed to break whatever spell had been holding me back because in one quick move I slammed my head back hitting him in the nose then brought my hand up and knocked the gun out of his grip. Surprised, he stumbled backwards and using his surprise to my advantage I grabbed the arm that was loose around my neck and twisted it behind his back. He groaned in pain as I finished by slamming him into the wall.
“Bill! What on Earth were you thinking?” Ma said as she rushed over to where I still had him against the wall.
“I'm so sorry!” I said sheepishly as I let go of the man that I now knew was named Bill. I stepped away from him but in the process purposefully kicked the gun further away from him. There was no way I would let something like that happen again. “I hope you can understand that I don't take having a gun held to my head lightly. My first instinct is to react which I suppose is a good thing.” I finished with a light, awkward laugh.
What happened next was beyond surprising to me. Jace stepped in front of me, pushing me behind him. Due to the position I was in I could not see his face, but from the back I could see his shoulders were squared and his stance was protective.
“I get that finding new people in your house is a bit unnerving but holding a gun to someones head is not the way to go.” Jace said sternly. There was an edge to his voice and I was thankful that I was not on the receiving side of his wrath. But I could not help as my anger began to build, I was the leader not him. I could handle myself, I did not need his help.
Deciding to save it for later I just stood there and let him do the talking. The more he talked the more trouble he would be in later with me. By now you would think that he would know that I'm, in fact, a grown girl and can take care of myself, but apparently not!
“Pa, these are my friends. I found 'em in the woods and brought 'em back here so you and Ma could help 'em find their friends that got taken by the soldiers.” Peter said in his heavy accent.
His father looked at him for what seemed like hours, just staring at him with a blank expression. Then, with a heavy sigh, he turned to his wife. Ma was smiling and walked up to him and took his hand. The look of love and understanding in their eyes as they gazed into each others eyes left me awestruck. In that moment I knew that I wanted their kind of love. The kind that didn't die or fade with age but grew stronger as time went by.
“I'm sorry, I didn't mean to hurt you,” he said looking back at me. “ Well really I'm the one who got hurt...” Pa trailed off with a short laugh and scratched the back of his neck with his uninjured arm.
“I apologize for that. I was trained to defend myself since I was just a child so it has become an automatic reaction. I should of just waited and let Peter explain the situation to you.” I said, moving around Jace. This didn't go well with him as he made a low growl like sound as I stepped in front of him. Ignoring him, I took another step forward with my head raised high. I would show him that I could handle myself.
“I'm Aria and this”, I said sweeping my arm out toward my group, “Is my team. We are from Knight Tunnels and are on a search for our friends who have been captured. We found Peter in the woods and after summing up the situation to him, he decided to help us and brought us here to speak with you and your wife. She has been a great help with telling us about The Kingdom and the soldiers. Even letting us stay the night here, this is, if it's okay with you?” I said politely. I had to remember that this was their home not ours. If they wanted us out in the woods then that was where we would go.
