Chapter 10: First Kill
“Ahhh!!” Was the only words I could get out as some type of warning to this mysterious person that lay on the ground. Fear consumed me as I watched the arrow. Time seemed to slow down but not long enough.
My scream must have woken him up because just as the arrow was reaching him, he sat up. Though not quick enough. I watched in horror as the arrow sliced through his upper arm and then stuck into the cave wall beside him. Blood oozed from the wound, running down his arm. His eyes were wide with shock, focused not on the wound or even us, but on the arrow lodged into the rock beside him.
I knew at any minute he would turn and look at us, he would want to know who shot at him. I searched my brain for the right response. What do you say when you accidentally slice someones arm open?! Well, might as well try saying sorry I suppose.
“Um, I uh, I'm really sorry about that.... I didn't mean to shoot at you. Jace thought you were a bear and said that I should shoot you so really it's all his fault.” I rushed out.
“Hey! I didn't know it was a person. You were the one with the flashlight, I just tripped over his foot. In all honesty, I didn't think someone would be sleeping in here. My first thought was an animal.” Jace hurried to defend himself.
He had a point, plus I'm the leader not him. I should of thought of all of the possibilities before even grabbing my bow.
“I'm sorry, he's right. This was my fault. I'm the leader, so I should of thought before acting. I'm really sorry for, well shooting at you and if you would let me, I would like to get my medic to help patch up your wound properly.” I offered.
Finally, the guy looked up at us. His eyes traveled from Jace, who had the flashlight pointed at the wall beside him so not to blind him with the brightness, and then to me. His blue eyes seemed to be searching for something as he trailed them up and down my body. I started to feel uncomfortable under his intense gaze until a thought popped into my head. How could he see us? The flashlight was pointed toward him, leaving us cloaked by darkness. And yet his eyes roamed my body as if he was memorizing every detail.
“You don't look like much. Are you sure your the leader?” Mystery guy questioned with a raised eyebrow, as his eyes finally settled on mine.
My eyes narrowed into slits as I looked down upon him. Who does this guy think he is?!
“Never mind. I don't really care anyways.” He said before I could reply. Standing to his feet he proceeded to dust off his backside, being careful to use the hand thats arm wasn't injured. I felt another pang of guilt. Stupid Jace!
“Please, let our medic help you. She'll be here with the rest of our team soon and can bandage your arm.” I tried again, forcing myself to speak calmly.
“I don't need your medic, I'm perfectly fine. Now if you don't mind, I'd like to get out of here.” He turned toward the opening of the cave and started to walk off. I was about to stop him until I got a better look at his arm.
The torn flesh from before was now smooth. The only thing that was left that would suggest he was cut was the smeared blood on his arm. My breath caught in my throat while my eyes felt like that were about to pop out of my head as I stared at his arm.
I saw Jace look over at me from the corner of my eye. His face scrunched up in confusion and he followed my gaze to the guys arm.
“What the..?” Jace chocked out, telling me that he had in fact saw the same thing I was seeing.
“Huh?” The guy said as he turned around to face us. His eyes followed ours to his arm and his mouth pulled up into a smirk. Looking up at us again he let out a snort.
