Feeling better, Elsie Ebony Midnight Raven Liddre went down to the hall for breakfast. As she sat with her friends, who were boys, she enjoyed breakfast.
She loved the great hall - architecture interested her, but magic was her passion. It helped that this was what her parents wanted for her future too. She was going to be an auror.
She turned to the Slytherin table hoping to see Draco's white blond hair to distract her - it was always perfectly styled and her eyes felt drawn to it.
But the man Elsie Ebony Midnight Raven Liddre hoped to distract her was distracted himself - concentrating on eating and looking veritably incognisant to the people who were supposed to be his friends.
She left the hall quickly, uncomfortable at the emotions the blond boy was evoking. She slowly wandered the halls, her head full of thoughts she couldn't compute. Then she stopped.
The boy she had just been thinking about was standing right there in the empty corridor. Standing on the stone floor. Standing not in her imagination, not in her dreams but right there. She froze.
As Elsie Ebony Midnight Raven Liddre met eyes with the blue orbs that had haunted her mind for the last few days, her thoughts slowed. As he walked forward she stepped backwards. She kept moving back, moving in slow motion, as if possessed.
Her back hit against a wall, jolting her back to reality. Draco kept moving forward getting closer and closer. They were face to face, just a few centimetres apart.
He reached out and tilted her chin up with fingers slender, lithe and utterly cold. Draco's eyes, dignitary yet sardonic, narrowed slightly as he observed Elsie Ebony Midnight Raven Liddre's reactions.
"Are you... scared of me?" he asked carefully upon noticing Elsie Ebony Midnight Raven Liddre's quiet but sharp gasp.
Elsie Ebony Midnight Raven Liddre started to warm, her cheeks betraying what she was so desperately trying to hide: she wasn't scared, she was excited.
"And here I thought Gryffindors were meant to be brave."
______
Still thinking about Draco, Elsie Ebony Midnight Raven Liddre walked through Hogwarts' dark seemingly endless corridors on her way to Defense Against the Dark Arts, which the Gryffindors shared with the Slytherins.
However, Elsie Ebony Midnight Raven Liddre had forgotten this after the incident with Draco and when she stepped into the classroom she met eyes with the blue orbs that had haunted her.
Moody cleared his throat and assigned the pupils into pairs reading out a list one by one before they could take their seats. This was different but not unusual and it was common for Moody to shake things up.
Elsie Ebony Midnight Raven Liddre normally sat next to Hermione and she couldn't help but feel a little grateful for the change in routine as Hermione always answered all the questions right - she felt stupid sitting next to her.
"Elsie Ebony Midnight Raven Liddre...and..."Please be Draco, please be Draco!
"...Theodore Nott."
Fuck.
Theodore Nott was one of Draco's "friends" and at this point she would gladly be sitting with Hermione as usual.
"Hey bludgy," Theodore said, greeting her as they took their seats at the front of the class.
When Draco said it, Elsie Ebony Midnight Raven Liddre kind of enjoyed it even thought it was aimed at her unfortunate incident with a bludger.
But when Theodore said it, it felt foreign from his mouth.
"I need volunteers," Moody announced. "A brave Gryffindor and their partner perhaps?" Moody said. Before anyone else had the chance to volunteer, he said again, "Elsie and Theodore, perfect."
Double fuck.
"We will be practicing Imperio curses today and I think..." Moody announced. "Theodore will cast it."
This caused a stir in the class - Defense Against the Dark Arts was never this hands on and they all knew how dangerous an Imperio spell could be. Whether from family members during Voldemort's first seize of power or from history books, they all knew the consequences of casting one.
The curse placed the victim completely under the caster's control and it was infamous for being one of the three Unforgivable Curses.
Theodore had no such qualms. The teacher had told him to do it so he had, knowing he would not be sent to Azkaban like others who cast it while he was under Hogwarts' protection.
"Imperio!" Theodore casted the spell.
Perfectly.
Triple fuck.
This was bad for Elsie Ebony Midnight Raven Liddre.
Very bad.To test the waters, Theodore said, "Tie my shoelaces."
Elsie Ebony Midnight Raven Liddre's body moved of its own volition. Kneeling down, her fingers moved quickly, tying the brunette boy's shoelaces.
She looked around. Everyone was laughing. Even Draco. It stung more than it should have.
"Well Elsie Liddre," Theodore started, "Will you go to the Yule Ball with me?"
Elsie Ebony Midnight Raven Liddre tried to say no. She did. But her mouth was compelled to move into the shape of a yes and a strangled sound vaguely resembling agreement while her head moved up and down.
To resolve drama that may interrupt the tri wizard tournament Dumbledore made a rule that any invitation and agreement to the Yule Ball was binding. So now she had to go with Theodore Nott.
Quadruple fuck.
Elsie Ebony Midnight Raven Liddre had been hoping Draco would ask her, even if that was unlikely given their past. She knew it wouldn't happen but that hadn't stopped her from hoping. This had though.
