Time: 11:16 PM
"Three!"
"MARLA, DON'T!"
a shot rang through out the building, but only the cry of the fallen.
As I stared into the eyes of the intruder, it was clear, the now glossed over eyes, the brown hair, the uniform, painted black.
It was someone in disguise, but the person was dead.
Marla Addington, someone that was related to the Ennard case. Was she the one behind it all? Through my years as chief of police, I never found who did it. It was nagging away at me. Maybe this was it.
I was wrong.
Charlie ran over to Marla, her lifeless body on the floor, a shell of what once was.
Life was fleeting, we cherise every moment, but she wasted her's, looking for something that wasn't close by, but was instead elsewhere.
"MARLA!!" Charlie repeated her name, over, and over, like nails on a chalkboard.
She knew her, but we didn't. Childhood friends, maybe?
Donna had passed out, so John went to aid her and get her out of the room and to a spot where she could rest. David and I went to comfort Charlie, interrogation would come later.
"The hell happened here?" David asked Charlie, we were both confused, looks like we would had gotten more questions than answers.
My name is Clay Burke, chief of police in Hurricane Utah, but you already knew that.
You may be wondering, why the narration now after everything that's happened? Well, to be honest, I don't got a clue. But thought it could speed things up a little.
You already met everyone l, with that out of the way, let's get back on track.
"S-she was my friend....why would she do this?!" Charlie had said, tears powering down like a waterfall.
"She wanted something, and died trying to get it. Maybe she was driven mad."
"S-she was looking for something called Remnant...it's not here..!!" She said, yelling out to the building, nothing yelling back.
David looked annoyed, seeming he wanted to get away from this moment.
"Let's get you out of here, Charlotte." David said, helping Charlie up to her feet, but she pushed him away.
"Don't call me that! You don't get to call me that!" Charlie said, anger filling her eyes, she pushed past me, heading to the door.
"Oh I'm sorry, I didn't realize I was talking to a lady." David said, smirking, I grabbed him and pulled him over to the side to talk.
"What's gotten into you? Some crooked woman comes in, you shoot her dead and find out it's someone's old friend, and you good making fun of it?"
"One of us could had died, I had to shoot." David said, I talked back to him.
"You don't know that, the gun could had been full of blanks."
"That's still enough to kill someone. You need to start thinking realistically, Delanco got away cause of you telling me not to shoot him, you can't keep giving people second chances Burke. Keep this up and you'll belong in the clouds."
Angered, tired, and out of grief and regret, I punched David, he was a recruit, an asshole, maybe, but he knew how we worked, there was always time for second chances, even if the world was bleak.
The punch knocked him to the floor, after a second, I held out a hand to him.
"Together or not, there is always room for a second chance, besides, your my friend. On the job or not. Let's try not to be enemies."
He took my hand after a second of thinking.
Outside of the room, John was checking on Donna, she was breathing fine, and was snoring. John noticed Charlie heading out the door, so he got up and followed her.
"Charlotte?" John said, looking to the brunette, worried for her safety.
"What, Xavier?" She said looking at him, saddened about the recent events.
"Things might look bad, but they can get better, let's take the night off, and get us something to drink, sometimes if you drink the pain away, it can help!" He said, trying to put on a smile, but it wasn't working.
"What makes you think that will work? Someone I knew and cared for is dead."
"It's not your fault, and it's not her fault, no one knew what would happened.." he said, hugging her, comforting her.
Hesitantly, she went and hugged him back.
The two love birds were comforting each other, David went back to his senses and him and I left the room, I want going to berate the other two, so I let them go and leave. David and I kept checking on Donna every now and then, and gave the body of Marla to her family, and money to pay for the funeral, somewhere nice for her to be buried at.
Things were calming down, but someone I know was going to arrive soon, much to my surprise, and he was bringing two women with him.
These two, would be important to events to come, but, he would also be important.
Cause one of them was keeping secretes from everyone else.
To be continued.
