Last Boss is so underrated istg
Also just wait for like two more chapters for Niragi's appearance - I gotta do some character building <3
————————————————Oh dear again.
The deceptively solid ground sucks at my boots. I can practically feel the flush of adrenaline tingling in my fingers as i struggle and claw at the floor around my legs. I'm now down to my knees. They didn't even tell us about the electric shock we'd get if we were tagged. It hurt like a bitch, and now my limbs are heavy.
Meanwhile, Last Boss has engaged in a fight with the tagger; a tall person wearing a horse head. Fashion icon.
But that's not what i need to focus on right now. If i don't get out within the next five seconds, my head will go under, and dirt will fill up my mouth, my lungs. I won't even be able to scream.
I cry out in desperation, the mud gripping at my ribs now. I can't even move the part of my body that's underground. This, surely, is the worst way to die.
"Please, please." I sob, digging furiously at the dirt around me. It just responds by latching onto my wrists and taking them down too.
"SOMEONE HELP," I scream as loud as I can, as the floor greedily swallows my arms.
I tilt my head back and scrunch up my eyes, not wanting to see more than I have to.
Then, suddenly, strong hands are tugging on my shoulders, pressing the button on my back again. Thankfully, no shock this time, and the downwards pull on my body ceases. The mystery saviour hauls me out of the ground.
As soon as I'm out, i scrabble away from the hole I made, breathing shallowly. My entire body is shuddering, my heart double-beating. Stars dance in and out of my vision. So close, I was so close to suffocating. Which brings us back to the whole saviour-person.
I turn around, meaning to thank them, but they've already moved on, kneeling next to the decapitated tagger. I whistle, Last Boss really doesn't mess around. It's lucky the sight of blood doesn't make me feel faint. I don't need to feel fainter than I do now.
It's the guy with the scar down his face. I tune in to the two guys' conversation, and catch that his name is Aguni. Shaking myself off, I bounce confidently over to them, as if I didn't just almost die.
"...Aika would agree with me." I just catch the end of Last Boss's sentence.
"On what now?" I ask.
"Guns are overrated and blades are infinitely better." He grins at Aguni.
"YES FOR REAL," I exclaim, happy to finally have someone to agree with on this topic.
Aguni just stands there, watching both of us with a blank face. I try to stop my legs from trembling. I fail.
"Thanks, by the way," my eyes drop to the ground. For some reason, this is so much more embarrassing than it should be.
"Don't mention it. Next time, remember to watch your back." He gives a curt nod.
Last Boss starts to say something again, running a hand over his shiny head, until Aguni holds up a fist, motioning for us to be quiet. My lips press together inhumanely quickly, and I whirl around, searching for the source of his alarm. Trees, trees, and, oh my gosh! More trees!
I hate this game.
Then a rustling perks up my ears, and, acting on impulse, I bolt to the edge of the clearing and scramble up a large oak. As long as I stay away from the ground, they only have guns, right?
I lie on one of the thicker branches and unsheath a knife as Last Boss smirks up at me.
What? I mouth aggressively at him, and he doubles over in silent cackles.
I roll my eyes. Unfortunately for me, I'm distracted very easily, so whilst I'm wordlessly communicating with my new bestie Last Boss, I couldn't have seen one of the other taggers bounding out of the tree line, gun blazing, and I definitely couldn't have stopped the bullets that effortlessly ripped through Aguni's torso.
There's a still moment where a hint of an expression shows on his face (a miracle in its own right) before he looses consciousness and wordlessly crumples to the grass like a puppet who's strings were cut.
"AGUNI!" I yell, I don't quite know what I was trying to achieve by yelling his name, but the sentiment is there, right?
The tagger looks around for the source of my voice, and I almost pity their stupidity as I send a knife whistling straight through that thick horse mask.
I'm down the tree in under a second, almost twisting my ankle. Last Boss has Aguni lying on his back, and is putting pressure on the wounds. It feels so wrong to see him bleeding out like this. And the blood. So much blood. Is he going to just keep leaking until there is no more fluid to bleed? I bite my inner lip.
Oh god.
"Um... uhhh," I practically shove Last Boss off Aguni and my brain scrambles trying to remember my medical training.
"Ok... umm, Last Boss, get three strips of fabric." I can't take my eyes off the blossoming red stains.
Three neat bullet holes; one in the shoulder, and two in the stomach. We can only pray none of them hit any vital organs. My insides give a sharp squeeze at the thought. I desperately push back against the flowing blood.
"Hurry, please." My voice rises in panic.
After what seems a lifetime of waiting, he shoves three thin pieces of his jumper under my nose. Stinky.
I wrap the first one, tying it tightly, and the blood soaks through a little, before ceasing. Allowing myself a small exhale, I hurriedly do the other two, then cross my fingers. A warm metallic taste pools in my mouth, and I realise I'd bitten a chunk out of my mouth. I gag at the taste, spitting out most of it, even as the crimson blood continues to dribble down my chin. Oh Aika...
But no time to worry about that right now. I rip the hem of my black hoodie, balling up three neat pieces and shoving them under the thin bits to clot the wounds.
I then sit back on my heels, blowing out a long breath which ruffles my fringe. Unfortunately, I'm still bleeding from the mouth, so when I exhale like that, my own blood splatters all over my face.
"Eurgh," my nose wrinkles as I swipe it off.
Last Boss regards me silently, fingering the blade of his sword-thing.
"Congratulations, game cleared."
I take the phone out of my pocket and look at it in shock. Someone else just saved my ass. Damn.
"Must've been An." Last boss says, huffing then standing up, "would you like to join our group? You could be pretty useful..." he looks at Aguni, who's starting to regain consciousness.
I pause, tilting my head slightly.
Having a group could be useful, but I still don't know what the hell is going on, and I don't know whether I can trust any of them. Aguni saved my life, but would he do it again? Doubtful. I don't even have anything to offer them! If there were another 'game' where you had to pick a sacrifice, I'd be the first one to go. No. Working alone is infinitely better. I'll only have to worry about myself.
"No, that's ok, I think I'm just gonna work things out for myself." I grin at the disappointment in his eyes, "but at least you have another argument in favour of blades over guns."
"It was nice meeting you Aika, take care." He dips his head.
"And you."
