A/N: Please read the disclaimer about my interpretation of Hange's pronouns, found under the divider titled "PART II: THE SURVEY CORPS."

YOU HARDLY GOT a wink of sleep that night, and it partially had to do with how late you arrived at the barracks after your mission.

However, it also included your mind asking questions about the trio: Where were they? How did they feel about you? Would you be able to talk to them? Would they want to talk?

Commander Shadis ordered everyone to meet in the courtyard for an announcement the following afternoon.

The sun was hot on your shoulders, earning complaints from most soldiers (especially those who sunburned easily), but you were preoccupied with the same thoughts from the day prior.

You would get to see them sooner or later.

You were grateful that Hange was there to distract you, whether she knew it or not.

"How did it go?" asked Hange. "Talking with Erwin, that is... you don't look like you got much sleep."

The dark circles under your eyes sang of your exhaustion.

"It went fine— he wanted me to help him with a mission to the Underground," you said, suppressing a yawn.

"Oh," Hange blinked, a frown pricking at her lips. "Enough said."

You tried to keep your expression unfazed, but you couldn't help but wonder about Levi, Furlan, and Isabel.

Were they really going to join the Scouts?

"Yeah," you said, scanning the faces around you. You hoped to find Levi, Furlan, or even Isabel— but you only saw the same comrades you knew too well. "I ended up going, though. It went well."

"Is that what happened to your hand?" she asked.

You glanced down at your bandaged hand that didn't hurt much anymore. It likely helped that you went to the infirmary, too, to get it taken care of properly.

"Yeah," you said, opening and closing your hand.

The soreness made you think briefly about when Levi sliced your hand. Your mind kept falling back to him, like waves drawing back to the ocean. You recalled how Levi looked at you: the shock of seeing you again, the anger toward his capture, and that inkling of something else.

Perhaps it involved how you narrowly kissed him when you said goodbye.

You thought about it often when you first left— but that was years ago.

You buried the thought, deciding that remaining there would make it all the more painful. Besides, you had grown as a person, and so had he— so why did he keep popping up in your thoughts?

"You seem distracted," Hange observed with a frown, snapping you out of your thoughts. "Am I allowed to know what happened?"

"I don't want Erwin on my ass, but you'll find out soon enough," you promised.

"Ah— does it have to do something with why we were all called to the courtyard?" she asked, and you nodded.

"Probably."

Hange nodded, though still curious. It redirected when someone approached you.

"Morning, [Y/N]."

The greeting came from a man named Felix Hoffman.

Felix graduated a year before you had— but like you, he was a later recruit, having joined the Survey Corps after he decided life as a farmer wasn't for him.
