AS PROMISED, YOU returned the following night. It was easy to sneak out after your parents went off to bed. The two of them were heavy sleepers— and even though you didn't always have much reason to sneak out, it didn't prove too difficult a task when the time called for it.
Levi was the only one inside when you swung the door open.
"It's only you here?" you asked, carefully closing the door behind you... and, upon realizing that you couldn't see anyone else inside, you felt comfortable enough to pull down the bandana from around your face.
Levi was sweeping the floors. It was something that most people in the Underground seldom did, so it was nice to see.
"Don't drag mud inside," said Levi, whose back was to you.
You glanced down, realizing you were standing on a mat by the door. You wiped your feet.
"Furlan left your money on the counter— for both the salt and for yesterday."
"Thank you," you said, spotting a small pile of cash. It was a good amount— not enough to make up for what you'd have made with the salt, but certainly enough to do something with it. You made your way over to the table and pocketed it. You soon took a seat, watching Levi as he continued cleaning.
"You said we're going to rob some rich people next week, right? And they're from the surface?" you asked. Something told you that there was a lot you'd have to know.
"Yes," he said. "The only reason people like them come down is because of some human trafficking circle, so don't feel bad about robbing them."
"I didn't plan on it," you said, frowning at the latter part of the thought. Men like that made your stomach churn.
"Even though the Military Police won't be there to help them, don't be surprised if those cowards are paying someone to protect their asses," Levi continued. "Just serve as a distraction. Furlan and I will take care of the rest."
"...that's it?" you asked, raising your eyebrows as you waited for him to answer. "That's all you want me to do?"
The sound of the broom's bristles against the floor didn't cease, and Levi still didn't look at you.
"Did I stutter?"
"No," you blinked, though still confused. "How do you want me to distract them?"
"However you feel is necessary," Levi stated. His voice swam with carelessness— but as if that wasn't enough, his words made it clear. "Run next to the carriage. Throw something at them. Call them names. I don't give a shit what you do— as long as they're too distracted to fight back when we pick them off."
"...okay," you nodded, though hesitant. "Do you really want me to do this, though? I can probably help in other ways—"
"Yes," Levi stated, his answer blunt. "You and the rest of the kids will be distracting them."
As Levi spoke, you recalled the little boy who sped past you that previous morning. He couldn't have been more than eight or nine years old.
Did he call you a child?
"Kids?" you repeated, tilting your head. "Like... the kid from today, who stole the cabbage?"
"Exactly like that." Though he didn't ask whether or not you had a problem with being a distraction, his expression seemed to ask that very question.
You scoffed. Even though you agreed to help however you could, you couldn't help but feel a little insulted by the comment— and as opposed to keeping your emotions at bay, you allowed them to seep out just a little.
