TENSIONS BETWEEN YOU and your father only grew. He was home the next time you snuck out, and that entire day, you hadn't looked him in the eye. He didn't say a word as you left through the front door.

Again, your mind swam with thoughts on your way to visit Levi, Yan, and Furlan. You now knew the path there without thinking, the twists and turns coming naturally to you— and you were only a little ways away before you heard some footsteps. They followed you for a while. Every so often, you would glance over your shoulder, wondering if you could catch sight of whoever was following you— but after the third time, you had enough.

"I can hear you," you spoke up. You wouldn't deny the slight nerves coursing through you, but you pushed them down, knowing better than to freeze up. "Stop following me."

Those footsteps grew in speed. Before you knew it, a person rushed you to your right, and you reacted quickly. You dodged a fist headed your way, feeling a breeze move your hair as you did so.

You were face-to-face with a man you didn't recognize.

"We've been trying to find you, kid," the man hissed. "You're dead before you steal from us!"

He reached into his pocket and fished out a knife— and, though you felt your heartbeat quicken, you kept level-headed.

He swiped the blade, a slash of silver slicing the air. You dodged it. Though you found it easy to avoid his attacks, you wouldn't deny that he was faster than you were used to.

"Or am I going to have to teach you that myself?" the man asked, slashing at you again. You avoided it, but the blade flicked your cheek, leaving a searing pain. You were startled but reacted only with a slight flinch. "Who the hell are you, anyway?"

He lunged forward, reaching for your mask.

"Don't you fucking dare," you mumbled.

Again, the man reached for your bandana, using his free hand— and it was then that you remembered Levi's advice.

Don't be afraid to hit back.

Crack.

A splitting pain ran through your knuckles, and the man's nose started spurting out crimson.

Yep. Something you learned from Levi.

"Agh—!" the man said, stumbling back. One of his hands shot up to his nose. The thick liquid seeped between his fingers and dribbled onto the ground, leaving drops like jasper.

You threw another punch— this time, landing it in his mouth. He turned to the side, spitting blood and one of his teeth. You used the opportunity to lunge forward, then wrestle his knife from his hands.

That didn't stop him from swinging at you again.

"You bitch!" he shouted. He aimed for your face again, but you wove out of the way, giving him a quick slice on the hand with his knife.

"Oi, Neckbeard."

You glanced over, seeing Levi standing a few feet away. Relief washed over you. You didn't know when he showed up, but regardless, you felt comfort pool within you. Perhaps you'd been more nervous than you realized.

"Did you already forget what happened last time you came here?" Levi asked, his steely gaze stoic and threatening. "I'm surprised you're not pissing yourself."

"Ackerman!" the man gasped, letting you go. "I was just—"

Levi quickly grabbed fistfuls of the man's shirt, shoving him against the wall.

"Don't give me your shitty excuses," Levi mumbled, then tossed the man to the floor. "If you'd like to keep the rest of your teeth, piss off."

The man scrambled to his feet. His unforgiving eyes glared at you, but knowing the kind of position he was in, he hurried away.
