THE DAY WENT by faster than a second. That was how it usually was as an expedition drew closer— the days became shorter and the nights even longer.

You did your best to clear your head.

Though the time for lights out was approaching, you decided to take a long shower to help gather your thoughts.

While you were gone, everything at the barracks seemed to be going to shit.

Talia and Isabel were alone. Isabel was sitting on her bed, flipping through the pages of a book about animals (and looking only at the pictures), and Talia was getting ready for bed.

"You're just lucky, you damn thug," Talia said. She brushed her hair with her left hand and held a hand mirror in her right. "It's different when you have real titans in front of you. We'll see how you do tomorrow."

"Oh— you are an insufferable bitch," Isabel rolled her eyes, discarding her blades and walking back to you.

"What did you say to me?" Talia asked.

"I called you an insufferable bitch," said Isabel matter-of-factly.

"At least I'm not a mutt whose crimes got written off," Talia scoffed. Isabel's eyes widened, and she looked both hurt and angry.

"Fuck off," Isabel frowned, the book lying idle in her lap.

"I'm just telling the truth," Talia defended nonchalantly— though, telling from her voice, she was offended by Isabel's comment. "I'm going to finish getting ready for bed."

Talia attempted not to let her anger show, but it was clear from how she stormed out. She shoulder-checked Hange, who was walking in.

"Oi, what's with her?" Hange murmured to herself, glancing at Talia before stepping inside.

Isabel was still looking at the pictures but didn't seem to process them. They seemed to bring her less joy than a couple of minutes ago.

"Did you come to tease me, too?" Isabel asked, not looking up at Hange.

"What? No!" Hange clarified, which then earned Isabel's gaze. "What you did today was impressive— especially how you dismounted the horse."

"Really?" Isabel asked, straightening up in shock. "You think so?"

"Yes!" Hange. "I wouldn't say so if I didn't think it."

"Oh... thanks," said Isabel.

"You're welcome," Hange nodded, recalling the girl who walked past her coming inside. "I don't know what she said to you, but I'm sorry. She's just insecure."

"I'd be insecure if I were her, too— she's so rude," Isabel scoffed.

Hange laughed, then noticed the girl's book.

"What are you reading?" Hange asked.

"Oh— it's a book about animals," Isabel nodded. "I don't know how to read it, but the pictures are neat."

"You don't know how to read?" Hange frowned— and though Isabel almost became defensive again, Hange continued. "I can read it to you if you want."

The offer took Isabel by surprise.

"Really?"

"Oh yeah— it's not a problem," Hange smiled.

Isabel was quick to nod, her lips now lifting into a smile.

"Yeah, thanks."

Hange sat next to Isabel, whose book was cracked open to a page about horses. Isabel handed the book to her.
