THE MISSION TO retake Wall Maria was off to a smooth start.

The silhouettes of Squad Miche and Squad Levi were several meters ahead of you. They would be traveling furthest, leading the charge, followed by you and Squad Felix.

Your assignment was to ensure the safety of Squad Felix, who carried two wagons of supplies.

The rolling hills were covered in wild grass. Occasionally, you'd spot a patch of trees or a cluster of buildings— but nothing too interesting.

At least the sky was overcast without the inconvenience of rain.

Nicolette's voice cut through the cool air: "To our left, Captain."

You and your squad glanced to the left in unison. A bug-eyed, 5-meter titan eyed all of you several meters away. The titan hid within one of the wooded areas, blinking as it watched.

Creepy.

"Keep an eye on it, Nicolette," you advised.

You glanced at Talia, prepared to instruct her to shoot the flare, but she was already on it. She had her flare gun aimed above her head, a red stripe hovering above her.

You remembered your days of training and asked, "What do you think we should do, Talia?"

You glanced back at the open area ahead.

"Angle slightly to the right and leave it alone," Talia responded. "It's only a problem if it's pursuing us."

"Good," you agreed, then glancing back at your squad. "Ignore it!"

Each of them nodded, continuing to gallop forward like the titan wasn't there. As you had expected, it didn't pursue.

The next few hours were similar.

Nothing to note, save for the occasional curious titan.

As you neared the end of your travel, you broke off from the tail of Squad Miche's path and headed toward your assigned village.

However, as you and your squad raced toward the deserted town, you noticed movement.

"Wait!"

You and your squad paused atop a hill that overlooked the village.

You squinted, noticing a large hand nestled atop one of the buildings. A smaller titan waddled around the opposite side of the village. You soon realized that titans varying in size infested the town.

None of them seemed to notice you.

You began to count them, murmuring each number to yourself to keep track.

"There's at least six..." You glanced at Talia, who was already pulling out a flare.

Before Talia could fire the round, however, one of the titans straightened up, reaching almost 9 meters, and it whipped its head in your direction. Its piercing, beady eyes turned your blood to ice.

It was less than a second before it sprung into a graceless sprint, trampling over one of the buildings and running toward the squad.

Nicolette spoke up. "An abnormal!"

Claude interjected. "Yeah, we know! What do you want us to do, Captain?"

"Petra and I will take care of it." You glanced back at Petra, who nodded in response. "Talia, fire a round. Make sure that Squad Felix knows we're dealing with these fatasses. Nicolette, Claude, stay on guard and keep an eye out for any other titans. Be ready to provide backup if necessary."

"On it!" Talia responded, a trail of black already piercing the sky above you.

Swiftly dismounting your horse, you aimed your hooks at the approaching titan's shoulder, feeling them sink securely into its flesh as your ODM gear tugged you forward.
