AFTER THAT NIGHT, you felt much closer to Levi and his gang. You would sneak off more often to see them. When you weren't, you'd look forward to seeing them again, smiling to yourself about what conversations awaited you.

You also found that Levi popped up in your thoughts more often than expected. Even though you two didn't seem to get along, part of you enjoyed the banter. You couldn't help but wonder if he felt the same.

How interesting.

Overall, though, you were happy. It felt like the first time in your life that you were released from the mundane, living with something that kept you looking forward.

You welcomed the change of pace— and the best part was that none of your family suspected anything (for a while, anyway).

"[Y/N]?" asked your mother's voice, coming from the opposite side of your bedroom door. "Can I come in?"

You were in the middle of getting ready to sneak out again— your window swung wide open while you prepared to crawl out— but your mother's voice rendered you frozen. You removed your bandana around your face and shoved it into your pocket, hopping down from the windowsill and back into your room.

"Sure," you called out. The doorknob turned before the door opened, and your mother entered while holding a candle.

Her eyes, catching something unusual, were quick to give you a quick scan.

"Are you going out?"

"Nope."

"Well... that's an interesting outfit to sleep in," she said, nodding to your clothing of choice. Thankfully, you incorporated black into your wardrobe quite often, so it wasn't unusual to see you clad in black— but you knew you still had to come up with some excuse.

"It's comfortable." It wasn't a total lie, considering how well you'd broken in the clothes (and how it allowed for free movement when you ran errands), but it was clear that your mother didn't buy it.

"Come on, [Y/N]," your mother hummed. She moved toward your bed, setting the candle on the bedside table to bring more light to your room. "Let's talk for a minute."

She sat on your bed before patting a spot next to her. Your heart thrummed in your ears.

"Am I in trouble?" you asked. You wanted to refrain from showing your nerves, but all the same, this was your mother, who knew you better than anyone else.

"You're not in trouble," your mother assured you, laughing freely. Your shoulders relaxed, though you were still unsure. "I've just noticed you've been sneaking out more recently."

You felt your heart pounding in your ears.

"You have?"

"Mhmm— but I've noticed that you've been happier, too," your mother recounted with a nod. You felt like you would crumple as a couple of seconds passed, the anticipation making your chest clench.

"Tell me... is it a boy?"

The assumption caught you off-guard.

"No," you stated. Your response was a little too quick. However, instead of reprimanding you, your mother smiled.

"It's okay if there is, [Y/N]," your mother said, lowering her voice. "Between you and me, I used to sneak out to see your father all the time. I'm just curious."

Even though the topic was embarrassing, it was leagues better than her finding out about your side hustle.

You decided to go along with it.
