Escaping Together

The following day, Jack awakes in his bed. He raises up and looks around his cell. "Today's the day." Jack says. He stands up, and walks over the wall. Looking outside, he looks both ways down the hall, and he sees a guard on patrol. "Hey!" Jack yells, getting their attention. They walk over.

"What is it, prisoner?" The guard asks.

"When will I go to my hearing today?" Jack asks.

"You think I know? It's whenever Mr. Warter summons you." The guard says, walking away.

"Hmph..." Jack turns and slides down the wall, sitting against it. He then looks up. "Guess I can just wait... I wonder how Ethan is doing?"

Ethan is sitting in Fabian Warter's office. He has a very annoyed expression across his face and handcuffs binding his hands. "Is that all?" Ethan asks.

"Yes. Have all of your questions about us been answered?" Fabian asks, looking at Ethan.

"I actually have one more question. Why was I arrested too? Couldn't you have erased my memories like you did for others?" Ethan asks.

"It is not always that simple. You have witnessed more of Sicens' powers and abilities than anyone else. So there is no guarantee that the memory erasure will be permanent. And that is why you were arrested as well." Fabian says.

"That's bullshit and you know it." Ethan says, not buying it. "Based on what you've told me, memory erasure, using your devices, is permanent, and under no circumstances is it not. So why am I really here?" He asks.

"Hm." Fabian says, sitting quietly.

"Are you going to answer?" Ethan asks, "Or are you going to keep sitting there with your thumb up your ass?"

"I must admit, you're smarter than I imagined." Fabian says, "Why do I want you? Intriguing question."

"Well?" Ethan asks, waiting for his answer.

"You are special. Or rather, people from Universe 0 are special." Fabian says.

"How so?" Ethan asks inquisitively.

"Universe 0 is considered the standard universe. Being the first, there are no elements that are particularly fascinating." Fabian says as he stands, "Well, I suppose elements may be interesting for the people native to that universe, but for those who aren't it is pretty lacking. And as such, foreign elements entering that universe are far worse than if they entered others. And of course that also means that if a person from Universe 0 enters another, there are interesting side effects."

"You're telling me a lot here. Get to the point already. What side effects?" Ethan asks, fed up with the endless talking.

"You're an impatient man, aren't you?" Fabian asks, "Hmph. Very well. The 'point' is that people from your universe have a unique ability. Each universe has an energy about them that grants said universe's inhabitants whatever unique ability that defines their people, and you have the ability to absorb that foreign energy naturally, and gain the defining characteristics of that universe. It is permanently with you, and it stacks." He says, "Does that answer your question?" He leans over his desk.

"Wait, it 'stacks'? What does that mean?" Ethan asks.

"It means that you can gain characteristics from each universe you visit. Which could make you grow into a godly being. With power unrivaled across this fragile multiverse." Fabian says, "That is why you're being kept here."

"It doesn't make sense for you to pluck me FROM my universe if I pose such a threat to this 'oh so fragile' multiverse." Ethan says, "Wouldn't it make sense to leave me there, so that I won't be able to get those powers?" He says. Then he looks Fabian in the eyes. "Or do you have your own reasons?" Fabian raises back up after this. He picks up his communicator.
