NOAH LEANT BACK IN HER CHAIR IN THE CORNER of the room, her head hitting the wall behind her gently, and then she rocked forward again. She carried on the same movement she had been doing for about an hour, Joel and Tess sitting a few feet away with their eyes and guns set on the sleeping Ellie. They had taken shelter in a random building on the outskirts of the city, trying to avoid having to walk for the rest of the night in the rain. While Noah was happy to not deal with her clothes sticking to her skin, she didn’t like the idea of being stuck in the same room with someone they knew to be infected.

“Kid,” Joel’s gravelly voice said firmly, and Noah turned her head towards him, realizing he had tried to get her attention multiple times. He had his arm outstretched, a very familiar knife in his palm, and Noah furrowed her eyebrows.

“How did you get it?” Noah asked, taking it and shoving it back into her sheath.

“It was on the ground,” Joel responded vaguely, turning back to stare at Ellie like Tess was still doing. Noah hadn’t been let in on what their plan was, but she hoped it ended with the girl either getting shot before it was too late or getting some answers.

Ellie was curled up on a patch of grass in the middle of the floor, head resting on her backpack and her jackets covering her torso, but unable to reach her feet. Through the cracks in the ceiling, the sun broke into the building, acting like a spotlight over the girl. It was the perfect place for whatever interrogation Joel and Tess had in store for her.
