NOAH SAT ON THE HOSPITAL ROOM FLOOR, the gun slipping out of grip and clattering beside her. She saw the horror forever left on her brother’s face, blood splattering across his face, bullet holes visible across his chest and one right through his cheek. Noah was shaking, she couldn’t believe what she had just done, she couldn’t believe she had actually pulled that trigger so many times. She didn’t even think her hand was stable enough to aim right.

Her lip quivered uncontrollably, she could feel her brother’s blood staining her skin, her palms, her legs. She had done that. But there were no tears. Those had stopped for her brother a while ago, now she was staring at a stranger she had killed. Murdered. Somebody had just begun living a happy life, even if it was without her. She could have left him alone, she could have stopped looking for him, but no. She had to finish it this way.

Joel let out a deep breath, managing to push Aidan’s body off from on top of him, his shirt and face bloody. But he didn’t look fazed, instead his eyes found Noah immediately. He made his way over to her slowly, seeing how crumpled and broken she was on the floor. He crouched down next to her, going to reach out a hand to touch her shoulder, but she came to him first. She let out a whimper as she hugged him tightly, digging her face into his shirt so she didn’t have to see what she had done any longer.
