I got this thing for my birthday. My parents said that I should have one because stuff like this keeps people sane nowadays. I think they’re just guilty that I’ve had to grow up so fast in all of this. I can’t blame them, I think I’d feel guilty about bringing a kid into a world that was like this now. One that is pretty much either war or fungus.

Any kid that grows up inside the QZ doesn’t get a choice but to train up to be a FEDRA soldier, and as much as I don’t like the idea of being a soldier of any kind, I think it’s better than being thrown out. I’ve seen that happen, I’ve seen the shootings on the streets, the groups of people that bang on the walls, the public hangings. Mom and dad say that’s normal now, that we have to get used to it, but I don’t think even they want to believe it.

Our apartment in the QZ is small — cozy, so to speak — but we put up with it. I have to share a room with my brother, Aidan, and he leaves his stuff all over the floor. The only good thing about that is I can take any ration cards he drops and keep them for myself. He’s nine years older than me, which meant he was two when all this started. He doesn’t remember any of it, though, and he constantly tells me he’s glad he doesn’t.

Mom and dad are out most of the time with work, and I have all my schoolwork, so the only person about the apartment is my brother most of the time. He does work too only because he opted out of soldier training — he says he chose work over school because he’d rather get a bit than be part of FEDRA. Mom shouts at him for joking about it over the table, but dad stays silent every time. I think he agrees, but he doesn’t think it’s worth the argument.
