NOAH SWALLOWED HER FOOD QUICKLY, the heat burning her throat, but she was just happy for a nice, hot meal for once. It wasn’t like eating meat from a fire, it was so much better. Beside her, Ellie and Joel were doing the exact same, and she wondered what they looked like from the people of Jackson’s standpoint. The whole situation was totally unfamiliar to Noah, having so many people around her as she ate, the bustling of plates being cleaned and cutlery being clattered on the table. It had been a long time since she had anything reminiscent of a family dinner.
“There’s more if you need it,” Maria announced, her and Tommy watching as the three of them stuffed their faces, barely taking a breath in between each bite.
“Thank you, ma’am,” Joel nodded, lifting his head up from his plate for just a second. “It’s been a while since we’ve had a proper meal.”
“Actually, I don’t think I’ve ever had a proper meal,” Ellie disagreed, stuffing some chicken in her mouth as she spoke. “This is fuckin’ amazing.”
“Seriously,” Noah joined in, taking a drink of her water. “This is some good shit.”
Joel sighed, staring over at them once he saw the surprised expressions on Maria and Tommy’s faces. “Sorry.” He nudged the two girls with his elbow. “Girls, let’s mind our manners.”
