"You don't remember me?" - Matt

The triplets grandpa has dementia and he forgets about Matt

Third POV

The triplets were in the car with their parents and were heading to their grandpas house. A couple years ago, their grandpa was diagnosed with dementia and it wasn't easy news to deal with. Their biggest fear, besides him dying, was that he'll forget about them. 

Their grandpa was basically like their second father. Before the triplets moved to LA, they used to visit and see their grandpa every other day. But after they moved to the opposite side of the country, they only get to see him a couple times a year, and their fear of him forgetting them has only grew. 

Matt really loved his grandpa. He would always be super excited to see him. His grandpa used to always carry him when he was younger (we love a strong grandpa 💪) and take him to the most interesting places. He was a very cool grandpa... before he was diagnosed. But unlike Nick and Chris, matt had high hopes that his grandpa would remember him, so he wasn't that worried during the ride.

"I hope grandpa remembers us" Nick said, breaking the silence.

"I'm sure he will" Matt smiled

"Don't get your hopes up too high boys. It's been a while since we seen him" Jimmy said, who was driving

The rest of the drive was silent. Even after what their dad said, Matt still had high hopes. Their grandpa has still remembered them every time they visited, which made Matt forget that his grandpa even had dementia and saw this as a regular visit. 

They arrived to his house then knocked on the door. Shortly, their grandpa opened it.

"Oh! Hey guys I forgot you were coming" he chuckled, "come on in"

Everyone stepped in and greeted him. They all sat down in the living room while their grandpa sat in one of the rocking chairs.

"Soo dad, do you remember all of us?" Jimmy asked

"Hmmm let me see" their grandpa looked at all of them, "I know you, you're my son jimmy... you're his wife, Marylou... the purpled hair is Nicolas... the longish hair is Christopher... and that one is..."

Matt smiled at him, ready to hear to his name, but it took a bit longer than it should've.

"...I'm so sorry... I forgot" their grandpa mumbled

Matt's eyes widened

"You- you don't remember me?" Matt said

"No... I'm so sorry, I don't"

"Im their brothers, im your grandson, we share the same last name, my middle name is your name!" Matt ranted, trying his best to get his grandpa to remember him. Tears were forming in his eyes, "do you not even remember a little bit about me?"

"Hmm I... are you Justin?"

That's when Matt broke down. He remembered everyone in his family but him. The fact that he was also crying in front of everyone made him feel worse. He covered his face with his hands as he continued to cry. 

"Shhh shhh its okay Matt, it's normal for this to happen" soothed Nick who was sitting right next to him and rubbing his back, "I'm gonna take him outside for a bit"

Nick got up with Matt as they walked to the front door. Before they could leave, their grandpa mumbled a sorry to them. Nick looked back and gave him a smile, reassuring him that it was okay. Nick lead Matt outside.

"Do you wanna go in the car sweets?" Nick asked

Matt nodded as Nick unlocked the door and pulled him into the backseat with him.

"H-how does he n-not remember me? I-I thought he l-loved me" Matt sobbed into nicks chest

"He does honey. He just has dementia which makes him forget things, you know that" Nick pat his back

"I know that! But how come he remembers you and everyone else but not me?? Did I not mean anything to him??" Matt cried

Nick felt terrible for him. He knew Matt was never able to take difficult news well but this one meant a lot to him. Matt loved his grandpa so much, in fact he loves basically everyone. That's why he always has a breakdown when stuff like this happens. 

"Is he gonna forget about me forever..." Matt whispered

Nicks heart broke. He didn't know what to say. The answer would most likely be yes but how was he supposed to tell him that?

"I don't know darling... we'll see" Nick said

It was silent. The only thing that could be heard were Matt's sniffles.

"Nick..." matt mumbled

"Yes sweetheart?"

"Can I have a hug..."

"Ofc" 

Nick opened his arms and matt hugged him back as Nick rested his chin on top of Matt's head. There was another moment of silence until matt said,

"Thank you for always being there for me Nicky" matt said

"Of course, anytime. That's what brothers are for right?" Nick said

"I know... but it's not like I do much for you guys. I'm always the one crying and complaining"

"Let's not worry about that right now alright?" Nick chuckled, "We should probably head back inside before they get worried"

"They're probably already super worried. I made such a big scene, I'll look so stupid if I go back in there" Matt whined

"No you didnt matty. It's never easy to deal with these things. They'll understand"

After a couple more minutes of just staying like that, they decided to get out the car and go back inside. When they got back inside, their grandpa was super apologetic. Matt forgave him ofc, and told him not to worry about it. 

The rest of the day was pretty hard for matt. His family kept on checking if he was ok. He said he was, even though he was still super upset about the fact that he and his grandpa would never have that same connection. His grandpa tried treating him like he knew him for his whole life but it wasn't the same. Everyone noticed how sad Matt looked so Nick and Chris decided to take him home early and they spent the rest of the night together, trying to cheer each the boy up.

It wasn't easy but Matt had to accept the fact that this would now be the new "normal" for whenever they visit their grandpa.

Anyways I have some ideas but idk how I should write it so give me suggestions pls 🙏🙏

Idea 1: matt looks up to chris a lot so he copies what he does a lot

Idea 2: I kinda referenced this in this chapter but Nick and chris do a lot for Matt but Matt feels like he doesn't do a much for them
