«Hey Brook, want me to pick you up at the airport?» Aidy asked me, on the phone, while I was boringly playing with a rubber ball.
«Would it be okay with you? Otherwise I can always get a taxi.»
«It's no biggie. I'll be there. And if it's not me, it will be Cec, if it's not her, it will be Ness, and if it's not her-»
«No» I interrupted her. «Don't you dare say that name.»
«It's been two months, and soon you'll have to work together. You need to learn how to be friends again. She's not in New York anyway, I was about to say Conner.»I didn't want to be Kate's friend. I was still in love with her, and being friends with such strong feelings was impossible.
Summer was coming to an end, and soon I would be back in New York City, working at SNL for the following season, meaning that I had to see Kate's beautiful face every day, from eight in the morning to eleven at night, without being able to caress it.
I really believed that everything could have gotten back to normal, but even the few times we had called each other we would end up arguing and insulting each other.
«I know, I just want to delay the day I'll see her again as much as possible.»
«Your wish is my command. I gotta go, talk later?»She said goodbye and hung up, leaving me on my bed, staring at the ceiling.
I wanted to hate Kate with all my heart, but it seemed impossible. Our relationship had been too meaningful to just throw it out of the window. We had shared many incredible moments over the year we had known each other, I couldn't just forget them in one day.
«You alright?» I heard Lena's voice beside me.
I shivered for a second, not expecting her to be awake. I wondered how much she had heard from my conversation with Aidy, and if perhaps she had somehow heard the inner discussion I had had.
«Yeah, I'm fine. You should go, though, or my brother will see you.»
«You're right.»She picked up her clothes from the ground, where she had thrown them the night before, just before our usual routine of crazy sex, and headed to the door.
«Are we okay?» she asked, before leaving.
«Why wouldn't we be?»
«I messed up everything you had with Kate.»
«Honestly, I don't care. I'm leaving tomorrow, wanna have some fun tonight?»
«Sandy's, eight o'clock.»She winked, then left the house.
I took my head in my hands, unable to shut down the millions of voices in my mind telling me that being that kind of friends with Lena wasn't the best way to go handle a broken heart.
