18. Heartbreak

Monday morning I didn't show up at work. I hadn't been able to sleep all night, and the thought of me hurting two of the people I loved the most was giving me a headache.

Only at five in the afternoon, as I was slowly heading into a vegetative state on my couch, someone rang my doorbell and I had to get up.

«Who's this?» I asked, with little voice.
«Cec.»

I opened the door and saw her standing in front of me, wearing a black blazer and jeans.

«Why didn't you come today?»
«I didn't have a lot of ideas to pitch, the few I had sucked, and I haven't slept at all.»
«Why? What happened?»
«Kate kissed me and Dakota broke up with me.»
«Wow. Care to elaborate?»

She sat down on the couch, so I rested my head on her legs while telling her the whole boring thing.

«So?» she asked, after I finished. «What are you gonna do?»
«I don't know» I yawned. «I'm getting sleepy, though.»
«Let's go to the bedroom, okay? I'll wait here, cook you something for dinner and I'll see you tomorrow at work.»
«Stay with me, please» I begged her, with Bambi's eyes.
«Ugh, fine.»

She lied next to me on the bed and made sure that I was comfortable. She then put a hand on her belly and the other one around my shoulders, and let me rest there with her, as if it was the most normal thing in the world.

The following days I struggled a lot at work. I couldn't come up with anything remotely good, and the jokes I made were so sad and pathetic that I only said them to Cecily.

«You've got to get better» she sighed.
«It's been a shitty year. Ever since I've come here, everything it's been so fucking shitty» I spitted out, painfully.

I didn't really mean those words, as I found my new life in New York City to be just what I needed to escape from my hometown and my family, but in that moment it seemed impossible to live there, with so many memories and pain.

«At least you're becoming an aunt for the third time» she tried to cheer me up.
«You're right, that is good» I nodded, turning on her belly and kissing the baby. «I can't wait to meet this little monster.»
«I can't either, but now it's best if I go back to rehearsals and you go back to writing the monologue. I'll see you after dress.»

She got up and left the office, so I had to get back on my laptop to write the monologue for Natalie Portman.

I gave my best – so my worst – at the afterparty. There was a lot to drink, and I really needed to take my mind off of everything, so without even thinking about it twice I started doing shots.

«What the hell are you doing?» Aidy asked me, taking a small glass out of my hand.
«Having fun! Care to join me?» I tried to explain.
«Absolutely not, because believe me, you'll pass out by the end of the night.»
«I won't, I promise. And even if I do, will it matter?»

Conner was trying to get Aidy's attention, so she started looking for someone to take care of me.

«I've got her» Kate offered, taking my hand.
«Fine. Be careful.»

Kate tried to take me to the couch, but I stumbled and almost fell, had she not been there to catch me in time.

«Damn it, how much have you drunk?»
«A lot.»

We sat on the couches and I saw her a little stiff and nervous, so I told her to relax.

«I wanted to tell you something» I whispered in her ear.
«Oh, yeah? What is that?»
«I'm not gonna get back with Dota.»
«Why? Didn't you wanna marry her?»
«I've got my mind elsewhere» I smirked, staring at her.
«We're not gonna have this conversation here, while you're this drunk. Come back home with me and we'll talk about it tomorrow.»

So we did.
