Monday and Tuesday I only saw the girls at the pitch meeting, since I had had a lot of ideas and I was trying to put them down on paper. Colin and Michael helped me a lot, but I finally got the chance to work with one of the greatest of all time – in my opinion – Kent Sublette.
The few times I passed Kate in the hallways, we would smile at each other, and no romantic feelings passed in my head, luckily. I was not in love with Kate anymore – or so I hoped – and I felt almost okay again.
«Hey, are you done contemplating nothing?» Cecily joked around, entering my office.
«Yeah, sorry. Do you need anything?»
«Not really, just wanted to talk to another human being» she smiled. «Can I come in?»I nodded, and she sat casually on the couch, while I kept typing things on my computer, trying to come up with new ideas and sketches. After a while I just gave up, unable to concentrate, and started scrolling through my messages.
«I actually need to talk to you about something» I sighed, turning to her.
She adjusted her posture, getting ready to listen to me.
«I think it might be time for me to move out. I have been living with you for almost a year now, and I feel like I am taking a lot of space from you.»
«You're not, Brook, I can assure you. I actually enjoy your company, you know that, right?»
«Yes, but there are many things you can't do because I'm in the house, like being private with Jack. I want this, don't worry about me.»
«It's alright, I get it. Just promise me you'll stop being worried about me.»
«Never» I smiled. While we were on a break she helped me house hunting, since I still didn't know that much about New York City despite having been there for a year. She found the perfect apartment, a few blocks away from her house, so we decided to go see it together that same afternoon.
«I promise, it's gonna go great» she smiled at me, putting her arm around my shoulders.
I knew she was as anxious as me, but she was trying to keep her feelings to herself. She was really a great friend, one I knew I could be myself around; I could talk to her about my struggles, my joys, my ideas, and I knew she would have listened to every single word, without making me feel inappropriate.
«I love you. You are definitely the best friend I've ever had» I said to her, when we reached the front door of the apartment.
«I love you, too, Brook» she replied, with glassy eyes. «Now let's see the apartment, and if you don't like it we'll keep searching, okay? I am gonna miss you, roomie.»She hugged me, and we held each other for a long time; after that, we headed inside.
The first two weeks of the new season of Saturday Night Live were crazy to me: new cast members, new writers, new sketches, and for me even a new home. I was gonna move out soon, and I knew that Cecily was sad about it, even though she wasn't showing it to me.
«Hey Cec, are you okay?» I asked her the Tuesday after the second show, while she was in her room.
«Yeah, of course. Do you need help packing?»
«No. To be honest, I don't have that many things. But I really am worried about you, are you sure you're gonna be okay?»
«I am» she nodded, coming out of her room. «I really am gonna miss you, though.»I hugged her and kissed her forehead, stroking her hair.
«I just had an idea!» she exclaimed, after a little while. «What if we go on a girls trip with the other cast members?»
«I imagine Kate is gonna come, too.»
«Yeah... this was actually Leslie's idea, she pitched it to me yesterday.»I thought about it for a second, but didn't see the real problem. There might have been some awkwardness between us, but we were gonna be seven grown women and maybe Vanessa would have come too. I didn't need to be with Kate all the time, so I thought I might have been fine for the entirety of the trip.
«Who cares about Kate? I'm in.»
«I see you're finally moving on from her! Good for you, really.»
«Yeah, yeah. Now we gotta go to the dinner, cause it's getting late.»We got ready to go to the cast dinner, as usual, and when we got there everyone was already seated, waiting just for us.
«Took you long enough! I'm starving» Kate exclaimed.
«Sorry, we got caught up» Cecily excused us.I sat beside Aidy, with Kate right in front of me, who was staring at me with an innocent smile on her face.
«Hey, did Cecily ask you about the trip?» Leslie asked me, while handing me some water.
«Yeah. I'm totally in. Seems fun.»
«That's my bitch!»She hugged me from the side, then offered me some bread, which I kindly refused. I wasn't hungry at all, not now that Kate was staring at me so intensively.
«Sorry, can I help you with something?» I finally asked her, a little bit annoyed.
«No, I'm sorry, was I staring?»
«More like digging into my soul. Is something wrong?»
«No. Are you coming to the girls trip?»
«Yes.»I weakly smiled, then tried to enter someone else's conversation in order to end the awkward one I was having with Kate.
