«Guys, its's thirty minutes until midnight. Anything you wanna let out before the new year?» Jack stared at the clock, sipping from a glass of wine.
«Nope. No regrets» Cecily shook her head.
«Really!? What about getting pregnant in September and not being able to drink at New Year's eve?»
«Yeah, that was pretty fucking stupid» she rolled her eyes, taking his face in her hands and kissing him.We were at the same party we had went to the year before, and being there made me realize how much had changed in only 365 days.
The last time we had been there, Cecily was seeing Mark, Aidy wasn't engaged yet, and Kate and I were just about to kiss, that time for real. We had all changed and grown-up, we weren't messing around anymore.
Anne was there with us, too, and I honestly didn't mind at all. She was kind of cool after all, based on the three chances we had got to talk to each other, and she was a really kind person. I could see why Kate had fallen for her: she had a heart of gold, she was smart and undeniably beautiful.
«I'll get something to drink, does anyone what something?»
They shook their heads, as they already had a drink in their hands.
«Mind if I join you?» Anne asked me, taking by surprise not only me, but everyone sitting on the couches.
«Not at all.»I bought a beer, that I started drinking at the counter.
«Can I help you with something, perhaps?»
«Yes, actually. I know that you and Kate have been together, and I know why you broke up. She told me.»
«Did she also tell you that I'm a cheater and that it's only my fault if we broke up?» I ironically added.
«She told me that it was a wrong call and that she shouldn't have done that.»I gave her a quick gaze, questioning whether to believe it or not.
«So? We are still not together» I shrugged my shoulders.
«I know. I just would like to know if you feel anything for her at all.»Shocked by the question, I knew I had two very different answers to choose from.
Yes, I'm still very in love with her.
Unfortunately – not for her – those weren't the words that came out of my mouth.
«No, why would I? It's been six months.»
«Alright then. That's all I wanted to know, thanks» she smiled. She walked away, and I soon finished my beer. It was twenty-five minutes until midnight, so I had enough time to do some shots.
«Could I get three shots of vodka?»
«You've already drunk two beers and a martini, are you sure?»
«Man, you pour me those shots and I will pay you double. Deal?»We shook hands, then he aligned those three small glasses in front of me.
«Brook, what are you doing?» Aidy asked me, looking at me suspiciously.
«Nothing. We're here to drink and to party, aren't we? So, let's drink and let's party!»I drank the first one, and immediately felt my lungs burning up. I wasn't fond of shots, but when I needed to get drunk they were always there for me.
«Why are you doing this? Did Anne say something bad?»
«No. It's the fact that she's so... cool that's bothering me. I can't find one thing wrong with her.»I took in some more vodka by doing another shot.
«There's a really beautiful woman and she's walking here. Don't puke on her» she warned me, before walking away.
«Hi» the "beautiful woman" smirked at me. «Seems like we're the only single gay people in here. We should exchange numbers, to kill the loneliness.»
