"I don't like how friendly he is with the Goblin and his associates, but he seems like a good person," Peter said.
"Until the other shoe drops," MJ countered.
"There won't be one," Peter replied. "He is a good guy, if flawed."
"Oh, hell no," Peter said. "That man made my life hell. I would never work for him."
"Technically, he hasn't done that in this universe," Ned pointed out.
"Whose side are you on," Peter questioned his best friend.
"Your's, but I am stating facts," Ned replied.
"So I am an assistant," Peter said, "A servant."
"Seems that way," MJ agreed.
"At least it minimizes the amount of interactions I have with Jameson," Peter once more looked on the bright side.
"Even I could tell you that," Peter said. "The mob, the mafia, the various gangs; they always collect their debts. One way or another."
"Sadly, stuff like that was common back then," Steve replied.
They all turned to look at Peter.
"I guess we both have that in common," Peter said. "A week after I got my powers, a man robed a store. I could have stopped him. I didn't. Two days latter the same man broke into the apartment and killed Ben. I was at a late band practice. May was at work. Uncle Ben's death is my fault."
"No its not," MJ firmly but kindly told him. "You made a mistake-"
"One that cost Uncle Ben, a man who was practically my father, to die," Peter interrupted MJ.
"Peter," Ned said to his best friend. "I met your Uncle Ben. He was a great man. A nice man. He wouldn't want you to hold his death over yourself."
"I know that," Peter admitted quietly. "But I will never forgive myself for my failure."
There was an awkward silence in the air after that. Even Uatu was uncomfortable. After what seemed like hours, the screen began again.
"Damn it," Peter said.
"Doesn't surprise me," Bucky said. "Despite being expensive, drugs were a quick and easy way to escape reality."
Peter had a sinking feeling in his stomach. There was only one way he could have known all this. Especially in such detail. If Peter's suspicions were correct, everything he believed about the guy would be proven false.
There was a silence in the room. Everyone was looking at Peter. Eventually, in a calm voice that didn't betray his rage; though it was obvious it was there; Peter said: "Looks like you were right, MJ. There went the second shoe."
An) Done. A nice plot twist, even if I saw it coming when I first read the issue. So, no real notes past that.
