Resa, Roxane, and Meggie were gathered apprehensively by the fire. Meggie had told them what the disruption had been, but she didn't have the details they craved. Everyone in the camp had soon accumulated around the fire, awaiting the return of their leader and the others.
"Roxane! Help!" Farid was the first through the trees, and Meggie could see the panic as if it were written across his forehead. The woman stood, brushing her raven-feather hair off her shoulders. Mo and the Prince entered the camp next, concern etched on their faces. Clearly they didn't believe the girl could be saved.
As soon as Meggie saw her, she hated her. Meggie couldn't help but feel contempt, which was definitely strange, as she had no reason to hate the dying girl with the dark red hair. Maybe what she hated was the way Farid was hovering over her, urging Roxane to save her as if she were someone he truly cared about.
The girl was brought into the medical tent, and that was the last Meggie saw of her for the rest of the night. She took a seat next to Resa by the fire, and they discussed the possibilities of what had happened, though no one announced the truth. Anyway, Mo wouldn't bind the book anytime soon.
