Where had Resa run off to? One minute she was sitting next to him, smiling, their child in her lap. Then, out of nowhere, she had gotten up and run into the forest, taking Valor with her.
From the darkness of the woods, Mo heard a fleeting wail. The call of a swift. What perfect timing! Mo thought irritably. Although he would spare his family the details of his next excursion, he wanted to spend as much precious time with them as possible. Now Meggie was talking and laughing with Doria and his wife and son had just flown off into the forest.
I guess it'll never be easy for you, Mortimer. Soon Mo would be travelling to Argenta, disguised as a loyal soldier to the queen, possibly to be recognized and executed. But none of that scared him. What plagued him the most was that he would have to leave his family again, and they would assume the worst; but it would all be to help Violante, to preserve their home. Did he care about the queen more than his wife and children?
No. He cared about them so much that he was willing to die to protect them and their future.
At least that's what Mo told himself as he crawled into his tent alone, pretended to be asleep as Resa and Valor returned, fully human, and lay on his mat for several hours, trying to prepare himself to fully welcome the Bluejay as Resa, and now Valor, welcomed the swift.
It was hard to do with two of the people he cared about most curled up beside him, but somehow, when he woke up in the morning, groggy and irritable, Mo, Silvertongue, the Bluejay, felt stronger than ever and prepared for yet another journey.
