CHAPTER TWENTY THREE
THREE MONTHS LATERFor three months they had been travelling and had just gotten to Wyoming, Violet had been relatively silent despite Ellie's efforts, even Joel tried to start conversations with her.
He understood her pain.
And wished he could take it all away.
They made it to a house to ask for directions, an old man coming in as Violet and Joel pointed a gun at him speaking quickly,"And the gun."
The old man acted like he could care less, turning around and asking with his eyebrows raised,
"Who the hell are you?"
Violet answered speaking through gritted teeth, she hadn't slept right in weeks, she was angry and unbelievably sad. She missed Lily more than anyone would ever know.
Violet kept wearing Lily's clothes, they still smelt like her.
If Violet had known the last time they hugged was going to be the last time, she would've never let go,"Just someone passin' through.
Take the gun out, two fingers only, put it outta reach."Marlon pulled out his gun from his pocket before sitting down on the couch and turning towards his wife expectedly,
"Why didn't you shoot him?"
Florence in a monotone voice spoke quickly, unbothered by the intruders. Violet was confused normally it was a lot more tense when they did this.
"The gun's all the way over there. He didn't hurt me, by the way."
Marlon rolled his eyes, noticing the soup bowl that she had made for them, Violet ate it reluctantly too hungry to say no. Marlon spoke,
"Yeah, I got eyes. You made him soup?"
Florence shrugged as Violet glanced at Joel, fed up with the conversation as Joel spoke coldly,
"I'm lookin' for my brother."
Marlon scoffed as Violet snapped back losing her patience, she just wanted the answers so they could leave.
"Well, I ain't seen him."
"He hasn't even fucking told you what he looks like. Now answer the questions and we will leave for fucks sake."
Marlon and Florence's eyes widened before they both burst out into laughter infuriating Violet further, as Joel watched her worried, Marlon spoke after quietening down.
