When Violet got back to the house, she poured herself another drink as Ellie stormed upstairs, Violet was unsure what to say to him.
Goodbye?
Fuck you?
For making her feel things again, for making her hope for love, for safety.
She was fine before she left Boston, she was fine with the life she had, and now that she knew Joel, she knew Ellie, she knew she would never be fine again.

Joel walked into the house as Violet stared at him with slight tears in his eyes, before he could touch her, she placed her hand out,

"Don't.
Go talk to Ellie,
explain why you are abandoning her, explain why you are abandoning me."

Joel opened his mouth to speak, but felt the cowardice sneak up on him as he turned around with no word, turning around, hearing Violet's broken sniffles as his heart broke as he walked up the stairs. As he opened the door Ellie sat at the window reading a book, she spoke quickly,

"Is this really all they had to worry about? Boys. Movies. Deciding which shirt goes with which skirt. It's bizarre."

Joel stood at the door stuttering over his words, unsure what to say,

"Listen, um..."

Ellie snapped as she remembered Violet's heartbroken face when they heard what he had said,

"Why are you here?"

Joel rubbed his temple before speaking softly,

"I came here to talk to you."

Ellie closed the book and snapped again, as tears welled up in her eyes, Violet sat downstairs nursing her drink as she thought what to say, was their anything to say?
He made up his mind.
She's not worth fighting for.

"No, why are you still here? If you're gonna ditch me, ditch me."

Joel stood unsure what to say, he knew he was doing this for them, he was doing this so he wouldn't pull them down into his dark tunnel where no one escapes and he didn't want to lose anyone else, he couldn't.
He asked Ellie,

"What exactly did you hear?"

For a second, Ellie looked up, biting her cheek, before she spoke softly turning towards Joel,

"I have to leave them. You have to take them. You know, I stood up for you today because I thought..."

She stopped as Joel interrupted her drawling about how it was for her own good, making Ellie scoff in response. Making excuses for leaving them.
Ellie couldn't see any sense to this decision.
Ellie stood up unable to contain her anger any longer, after everything they had been through, Joel was just going to leave?
How could he do that?
