The Spark That Starts the Fire

Earlier that day:

The Deputy woke up zip tied to a bunker as he looked around, he saw a bald man with a grey goatee. He was listening to an announcement on the radio.

"You know what that shit means? It means the roads have all been closed. It means the phone lines have been cut. It means there's no signals getting in or out of this valley. But mostly it means we're all fucked. God damned "collapse", they all think the worlds coming to an end now. They've been waiting for it. For years. Waiting for somebody to come along and fulfil their prophecy and kick off their goddamn Holy War...Well you sure as shit kicked." The man said, looking down at Y/N and thinking for a moment, he knew a deadly fucker when he saw one, his time in Vietnam had taught him that. "The smartest thing for me to do would just be to hand you over. Fuck..."

He stood up and pulled out a knife.

"Get out of that uniform, we need to burn it. When you're changed, we'll see if we can un-fuck this situation." The man said as he cut the zip ties around Y/N's wrists.

"I can already guess what you want, you want to start some sort of resistance, fight back against the peggies. Well, in order to make people rise up, you're gonna need a symbol for them to get behind, the uniform can be just that." Y/N said as he looked at the man.

"Guess great minds think alike, at least in the resistance part. The symbol part is just stupid."

"This whole situation is stupid pal." Y/N said as the old man chuckled to himself.

"Don't I fuckin' know it." The man said as he offered his hand to help Y/N to his feet. "I know a soldier when I see one, Rank?"

"Major. Four tours of duty, Sir." Y/N said as he stood to attention.

"Good, you know you're way around a risky situation then. Means I won't have to keep giving you advice on staying alive every two seconds. Okay. Here's the plan, we need to build a resistance, best way to do that, is by building up our forces by taking the Cult's shit, Outposts, supplies, oil, destroying bliss silos, shit like that. Now, if we want to do anything we need a foothold, best to start small, so, go get a gun from the safe in the other room and when you're ready, get out there, I'll give you a rundown of the island and keep you updated on how you're doing out there. By the way, names Dutch."

"Y/N, Y/N L/N." Y/N said as he and Dutch shook hands.

"L/N? Your old man own a farm out in Henbane?" Dutch asked as Y/N nodded.

"Yeah."

"Your his kid? Shit, didn't recognise you. You've been out of the county for a while."

"Yeah, well, there was nothing keeping me here so I decided to join up. Come home looking for an easy job, maybe meet up with...with someone, look how that turned out."

"Someone?"

"Girl from my class, Rachel Jessup, Fai-"

"Faith Seed. Shit. I'm sorry kid." Dutch said as Y/N nodded.

"Whats the first thing to do, sir?"

Later That Day:

"Dep, just got word on the radio, Peggies just rolled up into Falls end, they're rounding up residents, that place is the closest to a capital this county has. You gotta help em kid, John's gonna take them for "Atonement" otherwise." Dutch said as Y/N was stood on top of the radio tower.

"What about Rachel's region?"

"I know what you're thinking, I know you want to go for her first. I get it, but these people need your help. John Seed is gonna hurt the people in Falls End."

"Dutch, please, just...tell me what's happening in her region." Y/N said as he looked towards the Henbane river."

"Group of people are operating from an old prison, a small pocket resistance called the cougars. They won't be happy if you do what I think you're planning."

"I have to try and save her Dutch."

"I get it kid. If I can, I'll help you, as long as you promise that if you can't save her, you put her down."

There was a long pause.

"I Promise, if I have to, if there's no other way, I'll put her down. And The North, Whitetail mountains?"

"Jacobs region, he trains the soldiers, The Whitetail Militia are fighting back against him. In the West, you've got Johns Region, Falls End is where their resistance leaders are holed up." Dutch explained.

"Looks like I'm off to Johns Region first. Dutch, keep me up to speed on Rachel, please."

"...sure thing kid. Hey, I know how close you two were in school, if you need help, a place to keep her safe when you get to her, the bunker's always open." Dutch said as Y/N nodded and put his walkie talkie away, attaching it to his duty belt.

"Time to get to work." Y/N muttered to himself as he climbed down from the radio tower and began making his way to Falls End...
