After my morning classes I was overjoyed to finally be able to eat lunch. I met Felix in the cafeteria, neither of us had enough money to eat anywhere else. The place was nice enough; a large pavilion style building made of brick, it was open to the outside for the most part aside from the kitchen and area where you got food from. Just like the rest of the campus, the walls were splattered with ivy and moss. The tables were concrete, drilled into the ground and dusted with rust. Felix and I chose a rather remote table towards the edge of the cafeteria, overlooking the busy place.
"I feel like I've been here for ages already." Felix set down his plate and immediately started complaining, "My early class is awful, but you will not believe who I met in my 8 o'clock!"
Felix had a very androgynous appearance, black hair, and a sprinkle of freckles on his face. He liked to wear fashionable outfits, usually pretty effeminate. He was the one who kept me up to date on clothing trends, and was the only person I knew who wore contacts cosmetically.
He moved on quickly, Felix has always been a really positive person for as long as I've known him. He hated dwelling on unpleasant things, especially when they were ultimately meaningless like a bad class. Through my sandwich I urged him to continue, "who?"
"Wait, first you have to know some things about the people on campus so you can really get the full experience," He stopped himself and I got ready to have a lecture on college relationships, "First, I'm pretty sure you've figured out that there's an obvious popular group here."
I nodded in agreement even though I have no clue which of the hundred cliques I saw today classifies as the "popular kids". Felix likes to stay up to date on the inner workings of social circles. It was the same in high school, he's always been more knowledgeable than me.
He gave me an eye roll, "I know you have no clue who I'm talking about, I'll just explain anyway."
"As soon as I got here all anyone I talked to wanted to tell me about were the popular guys, they're the aces of their sports and are in STEM, and all attractive." Felix talked like he was reciting a saying, "But what people really wanted to talk about, are their secrets."
If I wasn't a little interested before, I was definitely invested now. I wouldn't consider myself a gossip, but who wouldn't be curious about a group of rich, handsome, seemingly perfect students at a remote college like this having some dark secrets. Felix definitely saw in my eyes how curious I was, he turned towards me, clearly excited to tell me all the things he'd heard.
"Oh ok ok I've never seen you look this interested in something I've told you before, hold on this is revolutionary," Felix stood up and walked around the table to sit directly beside me, turned to face me on the concrete bench, "Look I'll point them out as I explain since you have no clue who I'm talking about."
He pointed towards a table near the cafeteria kitchen where a group of lean guys chatting enthusiastically. "See the guy with the brown hair? That's Jisung, he's pretty popular since he's on the basketball team, but everyone knows he's dating around."
The guy Felix pointed to had light brown hair and large eyes, he was wearing casual clothes that were plastered with brand names. He was pretty loud, I could hear him from where we were sitting, laughing loudly. He was sitting on top of the table gesturing wildly with his hands to his friends. Everyone was laughing and chatting while a basketball passed around the group, thrown back and forth until he caught it. He held it up in a teasing way while the others reached playfully to grab it. It wasn't hard to believe this guy was sleeping around.
