I hadn't been back to the dorm in a couple days. I felt too overwhelmed and worried about what Bangchan might do to me if he realized I was involved. I considered myself to be fairly intuitive, and something told me I should go back to the dorm early in the morning.
I listened to my gut, now standing in front of the tall brick building, illuminated by the early morning sunrise. The blinds were closed in our room. I peered inside nervously from the street, but I couldn't see anything. I resolved to walk up the rickety stairs to our room cautiously. I wasn't seriously worried, I doubted Changbin and Bangchan had gotten close enough for him to actually be at our place. But something kept me on edge.
I heard the birds chirping, and shivered with the chilly morning breeze on my way up. When I reached the door, I took a moment to listen at the door. I was paranoid.
After failing to hear anything of value, I took a breath before quietly opening the door. Inside, it was too dark to see anything immediately. My eyes had to adjust before I was able to make out the shape of Changbin sleeping in his bed. But the shape was oddly lumpy.
I quietly walked inside, letting the door hover slightly open behind me. I was careful not to make much noise, I didn't want to wake Changbin up.
I tiptoed to my desk, I had to grab some of my class papers. I tried to grab them from the desk without walking to close, but I also couldn't control what I bumped from that distance. I flinched as I knocked my hand against a ceramic mug of pencils. The clinked painfully loudly.
"So, you're the roommate?" A voice asked from the darkness in Changbin's bed. I froze.
"Seungmin?" It asked condescendingly.
"A-and you are?" I couldn't keep myself from stuttering a bit. I was scared I knew who it was.
"Oh yeah, you probably can't see me in this light. Here I'll come over so you can see me." It said.
I heard intense rustling and a grunt from Changbin as he was slightly jostled in his sleep. Whoever it was stood shorter than me, but more muscular. I knew who it was. But not until he stood in some of the faint light coming from between the blinds did it really sink in.
"Bangchan..." I whispered. My fears had come true. He was already here, the clues we had given Changbin did nothing. He had to have already made contact before we could do anything.
"It's nice to meet you in person, you know, I've heard a lot about you." He commented, his face was friendly, but it had a bitter undertone to me.
"I've heard a lot about you too..." I replied, subconsciously furrowing my eyebrows.
"You have? What things have people been saying?" He had walked closer to me, he was smiling still. It was eerie.
"Just...how popular you are..." I lied, "You're definitely famous on campus."
"Hahaha, is that all? Well, I'm not surprised Changbin didn't tell you about us." He laughed at me and shifted his weight so he was leaning to one side.
"We're together." He said simply.
I had gathered that they were friends at least based on the fact he had come over, but I hadn't expected them to be dating. I was surprised and worried, there was a huge obstacle in me and Jeongin's plan now....and it felt slightly as though Bangchan had won.
"When did you meet?" I couldn't help but ask.
"Ah...I think it was at our start-of-the-year party?" Bangchan reminisced. I couldn't believe he had began to bore his way into Changbin's life that early, he really had a problem.
"I've known him since high school, he doesn't remember me though." Bangchan said, looking back to the bed, "Really, I'm a little hurt."
It was gross the way he talked about it. It was like the people he hurt were meaningless. Like he couldn't care less about anyone but Changbin. How could he drop those people he was so obsessed with that he'd kill them so easily? I had so many questions.
But for now, he couldn't know anything. "Ah, I'm sure he'll come around, high school feels like a blur to me too..."
"You wouldn't understand this Seungmin, it's really more than just him forgetting me. I really feel like this is one sided, dating is a two-way street you know?" He asked me, rhetorically.
"Anyway, Changbin told me that you've been away pretty often lately...where have you been? You're not avoiding him are you?" Bangchan turned his attention back to me.
"Oh, um," I tried to think of an excuse that would make sense, "I've been staying with my lover."
"Hm? I didn't realize you were dating someone." Bangchan asked simply.
I felt my heart rate increase, I felt adrenaline rush in my veins. This guy was dangerous. And he sounded like he already knew where I'd been. I blinked and answered in silence.
"You see, I don't want Changbin sharing a room with anyone who seems like a bad person." He explained, I was confused for a beat before I realized what he meant.
"You see, a liar is typically considered a bad person." Bangchan walked closer, and I took a step back.
"I know everything. You should be smart, and tell me what all Jeongin told you." Bangchan was still smiling as he walked close enough that I could see his eyes looking at me. I stepped back again, almost hitting the wall.
"What are you talking about?" I asked, trying to buy time to think of what to do, this man was dangerous and I didn't know what he'd do.
"Oh, you know Seungmin. I'm Jeongin's family, so I always know what he's doing." Bangchan laughed a bit when he finished his sentence.
I knew he was lying though. He must not know that I heard his voicemail, or know how much I'd been told. I felt a wave of relief. I had an easy out.
"Oh! You mean Jeongin! Ah, he just told me that you're family, we didn't talk much about you." I assured Bangchan, trying to sound as nonchalant as possible.
He stopped smiling. "Don't lie to me."
"What do you mean? Why would we talk about you so much if we were on a date? I didn't want to say anything in case he didn't want to tell you..." I pulled the oblivious card as well as the romance card. I mentally apologized to Jeongin.
Bangchan seemed genuinely surprised when I said that. He looked at me with a neutral expression.
"So when you were together in the science building the same night Changbin was..." he trailed off.
"Ah...did Jeongin tell you about that? That's embarrassing, we probably shouldn't have been doing that in the science room..." I tried to answer realistically, again apologizing mentally.
"Oh..." He had stopped walking forward and he shifted his weight backwards.
I was surprised I was able to surprise him, I surprisingly was more relieved after this meeting than anything. There was a decent chance we could win.
"I'll just take my homework and go back then..." I said, collecting my papers and making my way towards the front door.
Bangchan said nothing, and I reached the door safely. On my way out, I turned and saw Changbin shift in his bed. He would probably wake up soon.
I quickly stepped out the door, and just as I closed it, I heard Bangchan whisper.
"He...was he lying...?"
