Bloody Owl

"Hedwig," Harry poked the owl, who was sleeping next to Errol, "you're going to have to clear off for a week. Go with Errol, Ron'll look after you. I'll write him a note, explaining. And don't look at me like that." Renee gave him a look, hoping it came off as concerned. She hated that she had to be looked after by a thirteen-year-old. It was supposed to be the other way around. It was her duty to watch over her nephew. And considering he lived in a highly abusive house, she was failing. "It's not my fault. It's the only way I'll be allowed to visit Hogsmeade with Ron and Hermione." He jotted down words on a piece of lined paper, tying it onto Hedwig's leg. The animagus gave him one last look before she took off outside the open window. Errol followed behind her serving around in the sky. Shortly, The Burrow came into view.

"Ron! Hedwig has a note." Ginevra Weasley's voice called out for her brother. She gave Hedwig a treat and untied the string.

"Looks like she'll be staying with us for a bit—" Ron stated, getting interrupted by Arthur.

"Harry's alright then?" Arthur put down his paper quickly, but Hedwig still saw the front page. 'Black Still at Large'. Her eyes widened and she squawked before flying back out the window.

"Hedwig! Come back! Bloody owl." Ron ran out after her, his hands pulled at the roots of his hair, frustrated

"Rennervate..." Renny slowly opened her eyes. Remus sat up straight in the chair next to her.

"Rem—" She coughed, her throat scratchy and dry. A hand came from the other side of her, holding a cup of water. James gave her an encouraging smile. Renee slowly drank the chilled liquid. And then the healing potion that Lily had brought in moments after. Remus noticed she was waiting for them to speak. He sighed, brushing the hair out of her face.

"You were taken by Wilson. When we finally got to you... You were nearly dead." Everyone could feel the emotion in the werewolf's voice. James knew how wrecked he was after he first laid eyes on her in the run-down house. She was lying on the floor in a pool of blood. Her wand was stuck in her chest, almost grazing her heart. "We got you back to Lily to be healed but she didn't think it would help you by waking you up before you were okay."

"It's October 24th," Lily stated her hand resting on Renee's foot.

"I heard that Renny's finally awake! So, I brought her favourite." Peter dropped a bag of chocolate frogs in Remus' lap. Renee smiled up at him.

"Thank you, Pete." She mustered out, voice still wavering. "Where's Siri?" The group looked at each other before muttering some nonsense about his lack of presence at the Potter household. "What's going on?"

"You know, my mum's needing me home." Peter quickly vanished. James and Lily shared a look.

"Oh! Harry's about to say his first word. Let's go listen, Lils." They got up and hurried out of the room. Renee turned to her boyfriend, unamused.

"I kicked him out." He knew that if he was straight to the point Renee would take it easier. "He accused me of mentioning something about our mission to someone and I accused him of a couple of things. Then I told him to leave."

"I don't understand where any of this is coming from. You two are best friends. Have known each other since you were eleven." Renee cleared her throat, touching her boyfriend's face. "Who are we to trust if we don't trust the people we love?" Remus stared down at her leaning into her hand.

"I trust you. And Lily, James, and Peter. Marlene and Dorcas." He swallowed deeply. "I can't trust him. He's proved that many times."

"What if he were to die tomorrow?" They were inches apart, craving each other's lips.

"What if you die tomorrow as a consequence of trusting him?" Renee stopped moving closer to him. Her eyes moved to investigate his own. Her hand dropped back onto the bed and she pulled away.

"I trust Sirius with my life, Remus."

Trying to keep a low profile was hard. Renee and Remus would keep shopping in Muggle stores and stay far away from the Wizarding community. The past year they lost many good friends. Fabian, Gideon, Edgar, Benjy, and the hardest ones to swallow—Marlene and Dorcas.

Only Remus was going to Order meetings. He came back, exhausted; explaining that they had to freshen up and take a group photo. Ren had laughed then. Two weeks later Marlene had been murdered in her family's house. Wiped out the entire McKinnon household. Dorcas came to Renee sobbing, but still threw herself into work a week later. Trying to not only distract herself but also get more intel on the Ministry's ties with the Death Eaters. She was murdered by Voldemort himself.

"Love, I can transform in the forest this time. I don't need to go on that mission." Remus stated gently from behind the woman. She was sat on the couch, staring at the wall. Debra sat next to her purring.

"Don't worry about me, Rem. I'll see you in two weeks." She muttered, feeling Debra's stomach up. The cat got out one day and came back pregnant.

"Pete's going to be coming around to see you while I'm gone." He walked around to face his girlfriend. "I love you so much." They kissed gently, knowing he'd have to go sooner rather than later.

"Let's get married," Renny mumbled to his lips. His eyes shot open. "When you get back, we're getting married." She pulled him back in.

"Okay. I'll see you soon, Love."

"I love you."

"I love you." Remus looked at his girlfriend—fiancée one last time before disappearing with a crack. It didn't take long until Peter showed up on her doorstep crying.

Losing your brother and best friend in one night was something Renee never thought she'd ever experience. Especially not at the hands of her other best friend. She let two tears fall from her eyes. One when she saw James and one when she saw Lily. However, she didn't have time to grieve. "Go home, Peter." She finally turned to the man, pushing him out of the door frame. "I can do this on my own."

"Ren, you can't go after Sirius! Let me, I don't want to lose you too." He shouted as he watched as she turned into her animagus. She landed on his arm, nuzzling into his cheek, and letting out a squawk of determination. Peter pointed his wand at her, Ren's eyes widening. "Stupify," he whispered, hoping it would cause it to be a light spell. Pettigrew pushed her body into the family owl's cage and pulled his hood over his face. After producing a lock on the cage, he picked up her wand and held his out to apparate. "Remus would kill me if I didn't do this, Renny."

Renee woke up soon after the man left her. She kept trying to turn back, hoping she could break the cage during it. That was until she noticed the cuff on her foot. He made it so that she couldn't turn back into her human form. Still in the Potter's house, she couldn't remove her eyes from her brother's body. Renee Potter would never forgive Peter Pettigrew for this.

She didn't know that Peter had already set Sirius Black up. She didn't know Sirius Black was currently on his way to Azkaban. She didn't know that Harry Potter was being placed on his aunt and uncle's doorstep. She didn't know Peter had taken her wand and threw it in the rubble he and Black had caused. All Renee knew was that she wasn't going to ever recover from this loss. She would never feel whole again.
