There was a lot of commotion from the back of the class when I came into Theater.
The fire in Antonio's eyes and the tension in his neck and shoulders meant that he was mad. As I came closer, he was going off. Malesha, being the good friend she is, listened to him. His words became clear once I reached my seat.
"I'm beating his ass this time for real," he said.
"Antonio. Would you calm down and slow down? Tell me what happened."
"Devin has no respect for women. I'm tired. This is the last string. This time no one can save him."
I swallowed. They were talking about Devin again. "What's going on?" I asked sitting beside Malesha.
Both sets of eyes focused on me. "I dont know. Antonio is pissed off at Devin."
"Devin? What did he do?"
Malesha palmed her forehead. "That's right. You don't know him. He is this guy-"
"That's getting his ass beat as soon as I see him. I ignored everything else. But he crossed the line with this."
Malesha signaled for him to slow down again. My heart raced hearing Devin's name. Antonio and Malesha both knew him already. According Antonio's anger, they didn't have a good history. Devin and Ranea warned me not to be around him, yet here I was. But we weren't friends. I only talked to Malesha.
If Devin did something horrible, I would have to tell Ranea. But Ranea may be mad. She wanted me to stay good with him. She didn't like hearing anything negative about him. When I kept telling her things about him, she tried attacking me and probably want to again when his name came out my mouth. Though, I was curious to know what he did now.
"What did he do?" Malesha repeated the same question I asked moments ago.
"He had been making passes at Melina for awhile. She rejected him. So I guess he couldn't take no for an answer and decided to grab her ass. Then he joked about it with his friends. She came to me crying about it right before class," Antonio explained.
Malesha's face heated. "He did what?"
"Yeah, he violated her. I wish she would have told me earlier on. I could have been taken care of him."
I didn't say anything. That made no sense. Melina seemed comfortable around Devin when I saw those two together. Their interactions exuded flirtatious to me.
Maybe Melina discovered Devin had a girlfriend. When Melina and Ranea met at the skating rink, there was an instant dislike between them. I wondered if they encountered each other again.
I didn't know much about Melina, but she craved attention and started trouble. Ranea might have confronted Melina about Devin or she might have confronted Devin. But he twisted people's situations and words all the time. There were a lot of possibilities.
I owed no loyalty to Melina. However, Ranea's boyfriend was involved meaning that she needed to know if he was disrespecting or cheating on her.
With all this going on, I couldn't let Antonio beat up Devin. That would cause too much trouble. I needed to find out what was going on.
I found Devin later. He was by himself. His hands were in his pockets. He looked around like someone was coming. I stepped into view until Melina walked up to him. I hid back behind the wall to eavesdrop on their conversation.
"Hey boy," she said.
"I'm not a boy."
"What are you then?" Melina flirted. Her eyes sweep over him as she twirled her fingers in her hair.
I wanted to gag. She lied to Antonio. If he violated her, she wouldn't willingly meet up with Devin. He didn't force her because Antonio could have easily protected her from him. I was right to be suspicious of her. She was a fraud. I lost all respect for her. Antonio was her close friend. She betrayed him by purposely talking to his enemy. I should tell Malesha about her friend. But she might not believe me.
"I'm a grown man."
"What's up? I'm here. What do you want?" Melina scrolled through her phone. Devin took the phone from her hands and pocketed it.
"Hey when I'm talking to you, there's no going through your phone."
"Who are you? My daddy?" She held her hand out. "Give me my phone."
"You are demanding. Reminds me of someone else."
She leaned back and rolled her eyes. "I know you not bringing up another bitch."
"You can't seem to get it right, Melina."
She snatched her phone out of his pocket. "I don't care what you wanted anymore. Call me when you aren't tripping."
She stormed away. Devin didn't care. He shrugged his shoulders with his lips turned up into a smirk. She was coming back to him. That was why Devin had no worry. He compared Melina to me. Not okay. I was nothing like her. I didn't flirt with him. My interactions with Devin was for Ranea. I had to find out information for her. And for Antonio too.
I came out of hiding. "What's going on with you and her?"
He looked down at me. "Hello to you too. I'm doing fine thanks for asking."
"You know I don't do all that. I want answers."
"Were you watching me?"
I folded my arms. "I saw you with her again. Now what is it?"
"She reminds me of you. So demanding."
"Don't you compare me to her again."
"What's with all the disrespect?"
"I learned how to be disrespectful because of people like you," I stated.
Devin threw his head back in laughter.
"Glad I can amuse you. Now back to my original question. What's going on between you and her?"
"Are you jealous?"
I contemplated on how I should word my sentences without revealing too much.
"Does she know you have a girlfriend? She was flirting with you. Ranea won't like this. This is going to cause problems."
"You don't have to worry about her."
I shook my head in disbelief. Devin charmed all of us including Melina. I knew he was flirting with her back. It seemed like he asked her to meet him. She fell for his charm just like Ranea and I did. But I snapped out of it. I couldn't battle my best friend over a guy. She mattered more than he did. Even though Ranea made me want to stay away from her at times, I had to still be there for her. She only did this for Devin. She painted a false picture in her head. Everything will go back to normal once he's out of that picture.
"Devin, just know that all this scheming will blow up in your face." I wanted to be sure that happens.
