Lightning slowly opened her eyes, and furrowed her eyebrows when she realized she had no idea where she was. She groaned slightly, looking around and taking deep breaths.
"Lightning?"
She looked up at the voice, and she was that it was her dad...and that they were in a hospital. How did she get here? Suddenly, everything came back to her. She had been skydiving, and her parachute failed. The last thing she remembered was falling way too fast, and trying to get her emergency parachute to work. After that, it was just a lot of screaming. A lot of pain, the sound of her friends calling to her, and then darkness.
"Do you know where you are?" her dad asked.
"...am I in a hospital?" she asked, her voice coming out weaker than she had expected.
"Yes, you were in a skydiving accident," he explained. "How are you feeling?"
"Ugh..." she groaned, now becoming more aware of the pain. She looked at the various bandages covering her, and assumed she was going to be here for a while. "Could be better. What happened?"
"Well, after you came to the hospital, you had to have a few emergency surgeries," her dad continued. "But you're here, you're alive. You're going to be okay."
There was a moment of silence before Lightning spoke up. "This sucks."
"Yes, it does," her dad took a deep breath. "I thought I lost you."
"When was all that?" she asked.
"Well, you had to have emergency surgery for 6 hours," he explained. "It's been a while since then, maybe 12 hours. I've been right here since they said I could come in. I love you so much, Lightning."
"So...am I gonna be here for a while?" she asked, knowing the answer already.
"Yes, I'm afraid so," he replied.
She took a deep breath. "Will I get better?"
"Yes, they said they expect you to make a full recovery," he answered. "But it won't be easy, and it won't be very soon. Let's just hope that it's true. And no more skydiving."
"Yeah, I guess I'll take a break," she sighed. Then she noticed that her friends were nowhere to be seen. "So, uh...where are Frosty and Minty?"
"Oh...Frosty had to go for her own family emergency," her dad said. "Minty decided to go with her. But they have been calling all the time to check on you." He got out his phone. "Here, you can talk to them. If you're up for it."
"Yeah, I'm up for it," she said, about to reach for the phone, but wincing when she moved even slightly. He stopped her from moving, and held the phone up for her.
"Hello?" Frosty's voice came from the other end of the call.
"Hey, Frosty," Lightning replied weakly.
"Dusty! How are you?" Frosty asked excitedly.
"Pretty good, for just being in a skydiving accident," Lightning answered, coughing slightly. "A little pain but...not as much as before."
"Wait, you remember what happened?" Frosty asked, sounding shocked.
"Kind of," Lightning said. "Here and there, you know? I remember hitting the ground, way too hard. And I couldn't scream after that, no matter how much it hurt. Then I heard you calling to me...and that's the last thing I remember."
"You don't sound very good," Frosty commented. "So, how long do you have to stay there?"
"Not sure, probably a while," Lightning replied.
"That's too bad," Minty's voice spoke up. "So, you won't be doing any adventure vlogs with us."
Lightning sighed. "Doesn't look like it."
"Okay, well uh...we'll be thinking of you," Frosty said hesitantly.
"Yeah, me too," Minty said. "Bye, Dusty." All of a sudden, the call disconnected. She was about to say something, but her dad took the phone and put it back in his pocket.
"Must have lost connection wherever they are," he said.
Lightning paused. "Huh?" she looked up at him, still feeling rather fuzzy.
"You should get some rest," he said, sitting back down next to the bed.
"Yeah..." she said slowly, then shook her head. "I mean no, I'm fine," she tried to sit up, but the movement caused her a lot more pain.
"No, no, not too fast," her dad said, stopping her from getting up. "You can't do that. I'll go find someone to help you. Stay right there!" he got up and ran out the door, searching for a doctor.
Lightning collapsed back on the bed. This was not going to be fun.
~.~.~.~.~.~
It had been 6 hours since Lightning woke up, and she was already bored into tears. She went back to sleep for about an hour, and her dad had recently left to get dinner in the cafeteria. They didn't have mozzarella sticks either, so she was stuck eating soup and mashed potatoes. There was a TV in her room, but she hated watching TV even at home. It always made her feel unproductive and useless. She had gotten used to the fact that she'd be feeling this way for a while now.
Just as she was about to try and sleep again, her dad came back inside. "Hi, how are you?" he asked, not coming all the way into the room.
"Bored," she replied, staring at the clock.
"Well, you have a visitor," he said, getting her attention.
"Oh, yeah? Who's that?" Lightning asked.
"Someone named Snowfall," he replied. "Said he knew you from school, and that you are friends."
Lightning stared at him for a second. "...what? He's here?"
"Yes," her dad said. "Do you want to see him?"
"Yeah, why not?" she replied. Her dad left, and Snowfall came inside.
"So...your actions finally caught up to you," Snowfall said, sitting in the chair next to her bed.
"What are you even doing here?" she asked. This was the last thing she needed to hear right now.
"Your friends told me what happened," he explained. "First of all, I wanted to see if you were okay. And to see if you noticed that everyone tried to warn you, and you ignored them."
"Yeah, whatever," Lightning said. "This isn't the end, and as soon as I get out of here, I'm going back to being myself. I'm going to make a full recovery and I'm going to finish school and I'm going to be a fighter pilot in the Airforce. This isn't gonna stop me."
"Wow," Snowfall shook his head. "You really don't learn."
"Is there something you wanted, Snowfall?" she asked.
"No," he replied. "Just saying, you had it coming."
"Well thanks for your support," she said sarcastically. "Now get out."
"Fine, I'm leaving," he stood up and started to walk to the door, but stopped. "You know what? This relationship was never going to work anyways."
Lightning knew this might be coming. They'd had their share of arguments over the last 2 years, but never broke up completely. However, it did make sense. She was still going to leave soon, and he couldn't support her.
"I know," Lightning finally replied. "Well, it was fun, Snowfall."
"Sure, for you it was," Snowfall said, turning to leave again. Honestly, he had been miserable for the past year. She would always talk him into doing things he didn't want to, and he should have ended it sooner. He walked by Lightning's dad, not looking at him, and going to leave the hospital.
"What was he after?" her dad came back in the room. "Just wanted to wish you well?"
"Sure," Lightning said. You can keep thinking that.
